The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM's work to advance medicine and improve the human condition.


The Associate Director of Development reports to the Director of Development in Neurosurgery for the management of private sector fund raising to support research, patient care, and educational needs for the Department of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine. The Associate Director identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards annual and major gifts, primarily from alumni, past donors and grateful patients, but may also include foundations and corporations. Core responsibilities in this position include upgrading annual fund donors and building a grateful patient pipeline. All fundraising activity will be coordinated within Neurosurgery, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the central development office of the Johns Hopkins University. This position will also work to develop and implement a departmental alumni relations program, creating programming and engagement opportunities for the over 200 neurosurgery resident graduates.


Key responsibilities:

1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Department of Neurosurgery- the history, clinical areas covered, and the funding needs for research, education (residency and fellowship) and clinical programs. Develop a keen ability to accurately verbalize the tripartite mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

2. Partner with the Director of Development to create and execute development plans in support of Neurosurgery. Identify, qualify, and solicit new and existing annual and major gift prospects, make discovery calls, and build a prospect pool based on new prospects and past donors at the $25,000+ level. Initiate gift strategies and cultivate and solicit prospects through personal visits and written communication.

o This includes an annual goal of at least 70 virtual or in-person prospect/donor visits and 50 substantive actions.

o Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, and other development materials for prospects and donors.

o Document development activity in the Johns Hopkins "JHAS" client relationship management system.

3. Work with a portfolio of approximately 7-10 faculty and staff to motivate and educate to engage them with donors/grateful patient prospects.

4. Develop and implement a departmental alumni relations program with the goal of building connections, strengthening community, promoting the achievements and work of alumni, and growing philanthropic support for the Department of Neurosurgery.

5. Manage and coordinate stewardship plans with other members of the Neurosurgery development team for donors using all forms of technology/communication: print, e-newsletters, video interviews, etc.

6. Plan and execute cultivation events for the Department of Neurosurgery from start to finish. Supports the team in strategizing specific cultivation activities related to donors as well as stewarding current donors via lectureships, professorships, webinars and salon-style events.

7. Partner with Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG) to assist with direct mail and e-communications. Generate new content specific to alumni or donors or non-donors, as well as editing template correspondence and reviewing distribution lists.

8. Participate in Neurosurgery Department meetings, as well as meetings and trainings via the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and Development and Alumni Relations of Johns Hopkins University.

9. Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years related experience, with at least one year of professional experience.
  • Must have development experience including personal solicitation of prospects at the $25,000+ level with a focus on five and six figure prospects, and be willing to participate in all aspects of the program's fundraising efforts that include personal visits, direct mail, and events.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with important donors, alumni, patients, guests, Department chairs, faculty, administrators and professional colleagues over the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to work independently, manage and assist with multiple projects simultaneously, determine priorities, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, editorial and verbal communication skills. Strong social skills and ability to work as part of a team. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate with all constituencies through the written and spoken word.
  • Strong organizational skills required and ability to manage more than one project simultaneously.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, attention to details and accuracy, and some knowledge and understanding of accounting theory and practices.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, regional travel required, some out-of-state travel expected; be flexible with scheduling as this position may require occasional evening or weekend hours.
  • Ability and comfort working in an environment that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and success.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; manage projects; determine priorities; and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Experience working with broadly diverse groups of constituents such as, donors, alumni, faculty, staff, department chairs, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues, and/or institutional leadership preferred.
