Summary
Nuclear Medicine Tech 2 performs diagnostic and therapeutic examinations in the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory. Oversees the function of the Nuclear Medicine Computer and Archiving (PACS) systems and processes computer acquired studies. Oversees the function of the Nuclear Medicine Radio pharmacy. Maintains the day to day flow of patients in the Nuclear Medicine Lab.
Responsibilities
In addition to the duties of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist 1: Turns computer systems on in the morning. Checks that computer equipment is working properly and troubleshoots if problems found. Check that image printers have adequate ink and paper and replenish as needed. Detects equipment problems and initiates repairs according to department protocol. Initiates work orders and emergency calls to service companies or USC for the purpose of repair or PM and follows up on such service. Maintains computers and printers clean. Maintains image printer supplies. Transfers patient studies into archive from all acquisition computer systems. Checks storage space available in acquisition computer systems and deletes old studies as needed. Processes all computer generated studies done daily. Restores and reprocesses previous studies for comparison. Restores studies for patient for clinics and conferences as needed. Assists physicians in the reading room in finding and displaying computer generated studies. Teach and evaluate Nuclear Medicine students, residents and staff in the computer room functions. Obtains radionuclide's from suppliers or by eluting generator systems, maintaining sterile technique; checks for quality as per standards set by NRC, HRS, JCAHO and radiation control and records all information in log book. Prepares radiopharmaceutical kits as directed in the kit instructions, performs required quality control procedures on agents prepared, places vials in appropriately shielded containers, labels and stores vials appropriately and records all information. Surveys areas where preparation and injections of radioactive materials occur with a survey meter, decontaminates where applicable and logs information. Orders (Releases in the system) Radiopharmaceuticals as needed. Maintains proper Radio pharmacy records. Receives and checks radionuclide shipments for contamination according to radiation safety regulations, logs receipt and reports any problems to supervisor. Disposes of radioactivity and contaminated materials in accordance with departmental, hospital and federal regulations and records amounts disposed in log book. Removes all labels stating "radioactive" on all containers which no longer contain radioactive materials prior to disposal. Recognize problems, or unsafe conditions in the radio pharmacy and correct them or inform supervisor or radiation safety officer. Maintains work areas in clean and orderly condition. Always follows radiation safety procedures as described in protocol manual. Follows proper procedures to handle radioactive spills as described in policy and procedure manual. Assist the Supervisor in ensuring that the Radio pharmacy maintains compliance with all regulatory agencies. Assists in instruction and evaluation of student technologists or residents in the Radio pharmacy. Maintains storeroom neat and organized. Maintains current inventory of routine laboratory supplies and orders supplies as needed. Coordinate daily work assignments to assure smooth patient flow avoiding delays. Maintain weekly room rotation schedules of assignments. Assure daily staff work is evenly spread among employees. Assigns staff as needed to specific tasks or functions (ex. Portables, therapies, lunch relief.) Monitors employees lunch and breaks. Provides coverage to staff Technologists as needed during lunch and breaks. Assigns other related tasks to staff as time permits. Receives the inpatients and checks to make sure the transfer form has been submitted and complete. Triages all cases that are sent through the computer (paging the ordering physicians to obtain correct clinical information) to establish priorities for order of performance. Periodically checks the work list throughout the shift and assigns cases to staff as needed. Assists technologists when there is a question about a particular aspect of an examination. Assists in the CQI process Assists in the accreditation of the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Perform other assigned related duties.
Experience
Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
Education
Graduation from an accredited program of Nuclear Medicine Technology is required.
Skill
Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications
Credentials
Valid Florida State license as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist required. Nuclear Medicine ARRT or CNMT Certification is required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
Working Conditions
Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Environmental Conditions - Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public. Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. May also be exposed to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-Ray, chemical exposures and other potential hazards. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
