The University Police Department at the University of Alaska Anchorage is currently seeking applicants for police officer positions. The University Police Department provides safety services for the Anchorage campus and residential halls. Made up of sworn officers, a chief, sergeants, dispatchers, non-sworn security, civilian records professionals, and student workers, we show up every day to help students accomplish their educational goals in peace and safety. Officers provide convenient services to UAA staff and students. These services include vehicle jumpstarts, vehicle unlocks, safety escorts on campus and room unlocks, safety presentations, community policing and welfare checks on students, staff, and visitors.
Preventing and detecting crimes through active patrols; explaining and enforcing applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances, and University policies/regulations; crime prevention; mediating disputes; responding to criminal activities, interviewing skills; good observing skills, convenient services to UAA staff and students (vehicle unlocks and jumpstarts, and securing buildings). Requires good observation skills, problem solving skills, community policing knowledge, and good judgment.
Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by studying applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances and policies; attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; and practicing skills. Requires attention to details; observations skills, problem solving skills, and retention skills. Requires annual and bi-annual qualification of lethal and non-lethal weapons. Requires annual training for first aid, CPR, and AEDs.
Conducting criminal investigations by gathering evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, and interrogating suspects. These cases may include thefts, computer crimes, fraud, embezzlement, sexual assaults, physical assaults, domestic violence case among others. Requires interview techniques, good communication skill, crime scene processing, problem solving, report writing, computer and surveillance skills.
Enforcing state, federal and local laws, traffic laws, ordinances, and University policies/regulations. Requires knowledge of state and local laws, state and Supreme Court case decisions, university policies and procedures, good people skills, good communication skills, arrest techniques skills, problem solving skills, and good judgment.
Maintaining security for the university through regular/daily building checks; active patrols of all the university property (dorms, apartments, storage areas, buildings, and businesses), both on and off campus; and nightly lock-up of campus buildings.
Protecting life and property as the first responder. Requires emergency medical skills (1st aid, CPR, and AED), police tactics, firearms use (handgun, short, and patrol rifle); less-lethal weapons use (pepper spray, taser, and batons), control techniques, good communication skills, good problem solving techniques, good judgment, and the ability to make good decisions quickly.
This position requires astute observation skills, problem solving skills, and attention to detail. Applicant must demonstrate sound judgment on a day-to-day basis in a broad variety of situations including urgent or emergency situations, stressful and sometimes violent situations. Must be able to use various control tactics and possess effective skills to de-escalate potentially violent situations and carry out appropriate arrest tactics. Must continually maintain community policing knowledge and techniques and be skilled in effective investigative and interview techniques.
Must be able to effectively communicate with people one-on-one, as well as in small group settings and when necessary to present training or safety/crime prevention workshops. Good communication skills and sound judgement are also necessary to effectively testify in court. Must also have sufficient written communication skills, to include appropriate spelling and grammar, and be able to produce effective, accurate incident and investigative reports. Incumbent must have strong computer skills to complete required documents and reports as well as input data. Must be able to create and utilize training materials such as PowerPoint slides.

Special Conditions:
Shifts cover various times during the week/weekends/holidays covering a 24-hour schedule. Shifts and the schedule are determined by and set based upon departmental needs. This is a fulltime benefits eligible position. Must be available for recall to the university in emergency situations, position is considered "Tier 1 / Mission Critical" work and the department is organized along a standard law enforcement model. They must wear a uniform on duty, are subject to inspection, and are part of a formal chain of command. Must report for duty in emergency situations such as man-made or natural disasters.
Minimum Qualifications:
Safety Services - Police Officer Level 1 Recruit Grade 79 - No experience as a police officer.
Safety Services - Police Officer Level 2 Grade 80- Certified / Licensed Officer; State of Alaska or state with reciprocity as defined by the Alaska Police Standards Council.
Must acquire certification from the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) within one year of date of hire. Applicant must have civilian police academy diploma, high school diploma or equivalent, valid Alaska state driver's license (within 30 days of hire). Current, valid First Aid, AED, CPR certifications are required at all times to save lives and to be a first responder to emergency calls.
Must be 21 years of age or older. Alaska certified police officers and/or prior police experience preferred but not required. For out of state police officers and/or previous law enforcement officer experience the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) requires the completion of an equivalent law enforcement academy with a minimum of 650 academy hours and a State of Alaska basic law enforcement certificate is required within one year of hire. Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Alaska driver's license (within 30 days of hire).
Applicant must be physically fit and able to perform daily job requirements of a police officer. Applicant must meet the minimum employment standards for a police officer as set the by APSC and successfully complete a physical agility test. Applicant must possess and maintain the sufficient physical conditions and sufficient mental health, as required by the Alaska Police Standards Council and determined by a medical exam and physiological examinations. Applicant must also successfully complete a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination and a drug test.

Position Details:
This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
