Duties

Will serve as the Operational Health Physics Manager and technical consultant to NIST staff on
matters to include:
- operational health physics
- radiation dose assessments
- radiation laboratories inspections
- radioactive waste management
- effluents compliance, and personnel protection

Will also provide professional ionizing radiation protection oversight which includes:
- Registration and auditing of facilities using machines or materials that produce ionizing radiation
- Analyze radiological hazards assessments and personnel exposure data
- Identify trends and advise leadership on strategies to improve the NIST Radiation Safety Program

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, ALL APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS:
One year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 (ZP-III at NIST) level.Specialized experience is defined as: Experience developing or managing radiation safety program and procedures which consists of establishing processes and procedures in each of the following areas: operations, maintenance, design and surveillance of radiation safety programs and requirements. Responsible for conducting hazard analyses for a licensed broad scope radioactive materials facility.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.

The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook .
