JOB SUMMARY:

The Solar Project Engineer ("SPE") will have responsibility for executing aspects of the conceptual design, engineering, and procurement of utility scale solar PV systems. The SPE will coordinate & consult with other key individuals and outside parties including the SVP of Engineering & Construction, development managers, construction managers, equipment OEMs, independent engineers, and subcontractors so support the development, execution, and operation of solar PV projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The SPE will be responsible for the following:

  • Evaluate solar technologies and suppliers and provide recommendations for site specific applications.
  • Develop detailed layouts and preliminary drawing packages for solar PV systems to support development and execution.
  • Estimate system performance of solar PV projects using PVSyst, and alternative simulation programs and technologies.
  • Develop technical specifications and scopes of work for engineering firms and contractors.
  • Solicit and evaluate equipment specifications and pricing information.
  • Coordinate with civil and structural engineering firms, as necessary, to evaluate sites with complex terrain and obtain civil and structural design packages to support permitting requirements and project feasibility.
  • Draft single-line and three-line diagrams with required electrical details for solar PV systems in accordance with NEC, IEEE, NESC, utility interconnection tariffs and requirements.
  • Thorough review of engineering plans, RFIs, and submittals, with the ability to communicate deliverables between internal and external parties.
  • Occasional travel required with the ability to traverse uneven terrain.  Perform evaluations of projects in execution stage and prospective sites. Meetings with prospective vendors and contractors.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 4-year degree in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in engineering with concentration in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
  • AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and solar PV system design experience.
  • Proficiency in the use and interpretation of solar PV modeling applications, such as PVSyst and PVWatts, used for sizing systems and estimating system performance within the context of various technical and commercial constraints of grid connected systems.
  • Strong knowledge of photovoltaic system design and optimization and codes and standards such as the NEC, IEEE, UL, and IBC as they pertain to photovoltaic design.
  • Working knowledge in single phase and three phase, low and medium voltage power distribution equipment selection and specification.
  • Ability to dissect civil, electrical, structural, and mechanical documents.
  • Strong time and project management skills including displaying attention to details.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, and Google Earth. 
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
