Description:
The Acute Pain Service (APS) RN will work alongside the inpatient Acute Pain Service team to help provide pain relief interventions for patients undergoing surgical procedures, as well as other patient populations. The APS RN will collaborate with and take direction from the anesthesia providers and APS NP/PA to carry out patient orders related to pain management and regional anesthesia procedures. The Acute Pain service strives to provide excellent patient care through maintaining evidenced based practices and guidelines, critical thinking, frequent review of utilization and quality core measures, and patient and family education. The APS RN is responsible for assisting providers in the advanced assessment of pain and the management of regional anesthesia administration devices such as epidural catheters and perineural peripheral nerve block catheters. The APS RN will learn how to mitigate and troubleshoot devices, as well as collaborate with the APS provider team to develop a safe and effective pain management plan. A strong knowledge base in surgical and/or critical care nursing will be vital for this role as the APS RN will assist with the identification and rapid management of acute care concerns a patient may experience perioperatively.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Nursing care for Acute Pain Service patients: Carries out nursing orders specific to regional anesthesia for patients who have been evaluated by the Acute Pain Service provider team. Provides direct patient care for Acute Pain Service patients according to established nursing policies. Assesses changes in patient status and communicates with supervising providers for routine and emergency interventions to stabilize patients under the direction of the supervising providers and nursing orders/policies. Assessment, troubleshooting, and discontinuation of epidural and regional anesthesia catheters. Programming and management of regional anesthesia administration devices. Patient and family education regarding regional anesthesia administration devices and multimodal pain management. Discharge teaching and post-discharge follow-up with patients and their care team. Serves as a helpful resource for other nurses and staff members of the patient care team.
