Rockville, United States NIHNCIDCTD Full time

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD)

Senior Scientific Officer (Associate Director)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is recruiting for an Associate Director (AD) in the Radiation Research Program (RRP). The RRP is part of the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD), which is an extramural division of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a full-time government position in Rockville, Maryland.

This position will serve as AD within the Office of the Associate Director (OAD), RRP. The AD of RRP serves as the primary NCI official with overall responsibility for research, education, and coordination of activities related to radiation oncology and biology for the extramural NCI community. This involves the planning, conduct, coordination, and evaluation of the national preclinical, translational, and clinical research efforts for radiation oncology and radiation biology. The AD formulates the major overall scientific and operational policies of the Program related to a comprehensive and complex program of activities supported by grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and partnerships with universities, private industry, and other federal agencies. The scope of activity for radiation oncology and biology research and development is broad including radiation physics, clinical oncology, radiation biology for a range of modalities including X-rays, particle therapy, other forms of energy (e.g., hyperthermia), radiation sensitizers, and radiation protectors.

As supervisor for the RRP staff, 20% of his/her time is devoted to personnel issues, including recruiting, performance evaluations, and budget management. The position is primarily devoted to scientific leadership and priority setting, setting a national agenda for radiation oncology research and expertise in the effects of radiation. Given a central role in federally sponsored research in radiation oncology and radiation biology, the AD interfaces with other agencies involved in radiation research and policy including the Department of Defense (DOD), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Energy (DOE), NASA, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (DVA). In addition, the AD serves as a representative for the NCI on many levels including national scientific meetings, national oncology organizations (American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the Radiation Research Society, the American Cancer Society, and others), and at international venues (All- Ireland Cancer Consortium, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and others.

This position will collaborate extensively, and at a high level, with other researchers and government agencies (e.g., FDA, NIST) to develop strategies to measure and standardize critical quality attributes for novel radiotherapy products. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of, and experience in grant and contract processes and policies, broad knowledge of cancer research, and administrative and managerial experience. This includes the planning, analysis, evaluation, coordination, and integration of research support across program areas, across divisional boundaries of responsibility within the NCI, across inter- institute boundaries of responsibility at the NIH, and across the boundaries of responsibility of other Federal and non-Federal agencies which support cancer treatment-related research, especially in preclinical development of immunotherapies. This also involves a constant assessment of DCTD research program priorities in relation to existing resources for funding to meet program objectives at the Program level.

This is an exploratory ad to gauge interest and develop a possible candidate pool. A vacancy announcement (VA) for a Supervisory Physician, GP-602-15, will be posted on: WWW.USAJOBS.GOV at a later date.

This is a full-time government position in Rockville, Maryland. Candidates must be U.S. citizens. Compensation for this position is commensurate with the individual’s qualifications as permitted within Federal Government appointments.

Interested candidates should send their resumes to: NCIDCTDvacancyinquiry@mail.nih.gov. You may also contact Dr. Paula Jacobs at: paula.jacobs@nih.gov with questions regarding this position.
