JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Police Sergeant, performs responsible work of a general law enforcement nature with the primary emphasis on overall public safety, the protection of life and property and the routine enforcement of federal, state and local laws. Work includes, but is not limited to, patrolling an assigned area, responding to requests for police service, conducting preliminary investigations, and performing other related duties, as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Proactively patrols Village jurisdictional limits, including roadways, parks, commercial establishments and residential neighborhoods to detect, reduce or deter criminal activity, traffic violations or other nuisance activity; maintain order and public safety; performs commercial and residential security checks;
  • Responds to emergency or high-risk calls for service, including but not limited to in-progress criminal incidents, motor vehicle crashes, fires, drug violations, domestic disturbances, fights, animal complaints, neighbor disputes, roadway and/or environmental hazards; performs crowd and traffic control; renders aid to physically injured persons;
  • Conducts preliminary investigations of various natures, including motor vehicle accidents, missing persons, homicide, robbery, sexual battery, motor vehicle theft and larceny; interviews victims, witnesses and/or suspects, processes crime scenes, collects evidence, etc.;
  • Performs various public service duties; directs traffic at school crossings, provide police escort, assists stranded motorists, provides security at Village events; responds to citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance;
  • Promotes favorable public and police-community relations through personal contact with community residents, civic organizations, government agencies, social agencies, schools, representatives of businesses and/or industries; plans and/or participates in safety and educational programs;
  • Prepares and submits various reports and documents including incident/accident reports, traffic citations, field contacts, memorandums, work orders, observation reports, activity logs and other forms;
  • Prepares incident and accident reports, affidavits, citations, legal documents, memorandums, and other job related forms and documents; testifies in court as to report information and actions taken; utilizes computer to enter and query information, as necessary, in the performance of official duties;
  • Routinely participates in job-related training and courses to maintain skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to perform duties; remains abreast of federal and state laws as well as county and local ordinances of the Village;
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a United States citizen at the time of application;
  • Be at least nineteen (19) years of age at the time of application;
  • Possess, or be eligible to obtain, a valid Florida driver license and have an acceptable driving record;
  • Have never been convicted of a felony;
  • Have never been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude;
  • Have received an honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States.

Training and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency from a recognized institution; AND
  • Successful completion of the basic skills tests required by the State of Florida to be employed as a law enforcement – Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) or Florida Basic Abilities Test (FBAT) with a passing score, Basic Motor Skills Test (BMST) and Swim Test (For Non-Certified officer only).
  • Proof of current certification by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) and/or Police Officer certification with training from a home or state academy (Certified Officers only).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment;
  • Knowledge of safety procedures associated with risks and hazards inherent to the job;
  • Knowledge of Village policies, procedures and jurisdictional geography;
  • Skill in operating the tools and equipment such as police cruiser vehicle, police two-way radio, radar gun, handgun and other weapons as required, handcuffs, breathalyzer, body-worn camera, pager, first-aid equipment, computer/laptop, cellphone and other equipment as may be required;
  • Ability to enforce laws, ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality;
  • Ability to observe situations analytically, competently, concisely, and objectively and record them clearly;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and peers;

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Skill in operating the tools and equipment required including police vehicle, firearm, radio, lethal and less-lethal weapons, first-aid equipment, computer/laptop, cell phone, body-worn camera and other equipment, as may be required;

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Speak and understand English;
  • Ability to effect an arrest, forcibly when necessary, utilizing handcuffs and other restraints; defend oneself or a third-party from a physical threat; apply less-lethal or deadly force, as needed.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull or carry objects of varying weights from one level to another (includes upward pulling); exert force upon an object;
  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate and/or utilize standard equipment;
  • Frequently walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time; run, walk, climb, reach, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Visual acuity for viewing computer monitor, written documents, or objects at a distance; depth perception, peripheral vision and perception of color.
  • Hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work prolonged shifts or extended periods of time, day or night, to include shift work;
  • Work in varying environmental conditions including cold, heat, humidity, or precipitation.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is primarily performed in the field, under emergency conditions and frequently involves an element of personal danger. Fieldwork poses potential risk of exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, extreme temperatures and noise, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electrical currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence, disease or pathogenic substances.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Police Officer must maintain professionalism, courtesy, and composure at all times, including during emergency and high-stress situations. The position entails shift work, allowing for 24-hour coverage.

Essential employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine who will be required to work.
