Position Summary


The Department of Foundational Sciences and Humanities in the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is seeking a Discipline Chair of Physiology and Biophysics at the level of Associate Professor/Full Professor. This individual will also be responsible for teaching and promoting physiological sciences in the systems-based medical curriculum. They will work as part of a team to develop interactive case- and team-based learning activities, as well as interacting with, and mentoring, medical and graduate students. As Chair, they will be responsible for the continued advancement and excellence of the educational and service activities of the discipline, as well as the continued development of collaborations throughout the university. A key role includes the recruitment, management, compensation, and retention of faculty in accordance with the strategic plans of the School of Medicine and the University.

The applicant should provide a curriculum vita, a letter of interest, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and names of three individuals who can fairly evaluate the applicant’s teaching and/or leadership experience.

Who Are We

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) is a six-college graduate health sciences university dedicated to the interprofessional education of health and biomedical professionals. Chicago Medical School, the original college of the six, has been educating physicians and furthering biomedical research for more than 100 years. Established in 1912, the founders built a combined medical school and hospital where working men and women could study medicine at night.

As a community-based institution, CMS students experience a variety of clinical environments and models; including, inner-city and suburban hospitals, the James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center that serves U.S. military personnel, as well as private clinics and practice settings. Training focuses on positioning patients at the center of care and as an active member of the healthcare team. During student didactic training, CMS’ simulation labs allow students to sharpen their interactive and communication skills and develop critical reasoning. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Teaching of physiology in the systems-based medical curriculum, with emphasis on cardiovascular physiology.

Work closely with basic scientists and clinicians to develop an integrated medical curriculum.

Lead and direct the integrated cardiovascular, pulmonary, and renal course.

Supervise and mentor medical students in a variety of learning activities.

Oversee the teaching of physiology in graduate and biomedical science programs.

Other duties as assigned by the Executive Chair, FSH.

 

Role of Discipline Chair:

Manage and coordinate the teaching and service of the Physiology and Biophysics Discipline.

Maintain liaisons with other clinical and/or basic science disciplines in the University to foster an integrated teaching program.

Mentor and develop faculty, and provide recommendations for promotion and/or tenure within the discipline.

Serve on School and University committees, and review groups as a journal editor and/or on editorial boards. Commitment to service within the community.

Serve as the liaison to internal and external constituents and support the development of outreach activities.

Oversee the financial affairs of the discipline.

Effectively work to manage available resources.

Ensure an atmosphere of support, development and collegiality.

Be a highly visible collaborative leader.

 

Role of Faculty member at RFUMS:

PhD in physiology or a closely related field.

Experience in teaching medical physiology at a graduate level.
