Los Angeles CA University Park Campus, United States Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Full time

Adjunct Lecturer of Communication: CPD Summer Institute

The purpose of our Summer Institute is to equip practitioners with tools to increase their understanding of the role of public diplomacy and various public diplomacy actors; analyze the impact of communication technologies, including digital platforms; and employ innovative mechanisms for improving the image and impact of their country or organization in the world.

CPD continues to refine and strengthen the curricular offerings to better meet the needs of the practitioner. The 2024 program not only reflects the fast-changing PD landscape but also provides a wider range of hands-on skills and analytical capabilities essential for solution-driven and high-impact PD practice.

The following courses will be taught during the Summer Institute:
• Roundtable: Lessons from Contemporary Information Warfare, July 10, 3:30pm-5:00pm
• Designing Public Diplomacy Strategies: Group Program & Group Sessions, July 12, 3:30pm-5:00pm
• Roundtable: Public Diplomacy for Global Challenges – Climate Policy, July 18, 1:45pm-3:15pm

A hallmark of the Center’s professional training program is to consistently refine and update the curriculum. We are asking all faculty who teach in the CPD Summer Institute to reflect on their materials and to incorporate current examples and case studies into their presentation materials. We will also be providing all faculty with real-time campaigns that the participants are working on and ask that you use these projects as the basis of group exercises and/or simulations. We will be sending out an update memo about classroom expectations and activities in the near future.

The teaching methodology in the Summer Institute has been a combination of short lecture, followed by group exercises and presentations or class discussion. As this is a professional training program, and not an academic class, we ask instructors to ensure that their programming:
• Offers current real-world case studies and does not rely exclusively on theory;
• Incorporates participant campaigns and projects into classroom exercises and simulations;
• Involves the participants and elicits their experiences as they relate to the topic at hand so as to create a seminar-like conversation;
• Avoids focusing on U.S.-only examples and instead draws on examples and literature from around the world wherever possible.

Classes should include time for campaign groups to work with one another on their final presentation deck. This activity puts in practice the material covered, the results of which are presented in class. Most exercises take 20-30 minutes, so please plan accordingly. Another signature aspect of the program is to provide opportunities for participants to ask relevant questions of one another with instructors facilitating the discussion. We ask that you facilitate discussion and dialogue among the participants as there will be a wealth of knowledge in the room.

The hourly range for this position is $380.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

USC reserves the “Adjunct” appointment for faculty teaching less than full-time at USC, who are employed full-time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty typically teach only one course per year, but in exceptional cases, may teach one course per semester, if approved by the dean.

USC is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, proudly pluralistic and firmly committed to providing equal opportunity for outstanding persons of every race, gender, creed and background. The University particularly encourages women, members of under presented groups, veterans and individuals with disabilities to apply. USC will make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with known disabilities unless doing so would result in undue hardship. Further information is available by contacting uschr@usc.edu.
