JOB SUMMARY: The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is October to April but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: October 2024 MAJOR DUTIES: As instructed, the servicer lubricates a wide variety of fleet construction equipment; including automobiles, trucks, crawler tractors, wheeled tractors, air compressors, cranes, motor graders, snow plows, and generator plants. As directed: lubricates equipment, changes fluids, replaces filters, lights, windshield wipers and other components; repairs, rotates, and replaces tires; replaces exhaust pipes and mufflers; and performs safety inspections and road tests on various types of vehicles and equipment. Makes minor repairs and adjustments, replace shock absorbers, balance wheels, pack wheel bearings, inspect vehicles for damage and unsafe condition of steering gear, brakes and tires. Keep work area clean, steam clean vehicles, parts and equipment. Wash and polish cars, fit tire chains to trucks and cars. Dealer prep cars which include, installing antenna, hub caps, license plates, decals, remove shipping tape and protection. Deactivate shipping mode and washing car, fill out informational sheet about vehicle attributes. Rebuild tire chains for snow plows, assist mechanics in overhaul and repair of all types of equipment. Handle heavy parts, and large truck and grader tires and wheels. Lubricating and performing preventative maintenance at manufacture specified intervals, replacing and balancing tires when needed. Performed vehicle pressure washing for cars, and trucks to find leaks and help higher graded mechanics on major repairs. Equipment used include but not limited to: tire changing machine, tire balancer, impact gun, torque wrench, battery tester, wrenches, sockets, screw drivers, jacks, jack stands, hoists and lifts, pressure washer, vacuum cleaner, broom, mop, floor scrubber. Occasionally make trips to outlying areas to service equipment. Under direct/close supervision learns to read and understand work orders, standard specifications and written instructions; to use equipment and tools to complete tasks; and to use simple diagnostic tools to determine sources of equipment failures. Occasionally, the helper performs more difficult work under close supervision, such as installing parts and making minor adjustments. Performs shop support work: Use and account for tools and equipment. Pick up tools and equipment after completion of project or assignment. Clean work area and return tools to designated compartments, racks, carts, or tool boxes, as required. Sweep, clean spills, and remove trash to keep work area clean and orderly. Stock shelves and assists with parts inventory. May be required to operate and maintain a satellite accumulation area for the collection of hazardous materials(e.g., brake fluid, antifreeze, oil and other materials, empty containers, gloves, etc.). Perform battery maintenance and recharging (I.e., cleaning, checking for condition, operating battery, charging system, etc.). Stage equipment for repair or maintenance by driving or pushing vehicle into specific shop locations. Change tires and repair punctures. Check tires for improper wear indicating improper balance or alignment. Use machines for mounting and balancing truck and equipment wheels/tires. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment. Physical Demands: Performs maintenance tasks which may require working in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping and crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in other tight spaces. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally moves heavy items weighing up to 100 pounds, with assistance or with mechanical devices. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from equipment. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. Emergency road calls are required at times. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, loud noises, shocks, bruises, cuts and strains. Frequently exposed to exhaust and diesel smoke. To reduce the dangers and irritations from these conditions, the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, hearing protection, gloves, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear as required. Snow and ice are common in the work area when working in the field. Driving conditions vary with the seasons. In winter, roads can become very slippery with ice and snow. In summer, traffic and pedestrian congestion is heavy. Roads are in very mountainous terrain, sometimes narrow and steep.
