Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences

South Hadley, United States Mount Holyoke College (MHC) Full time

The Department of Biological Sciences at Mount Holyoke College invites applicants for a tenure track position in developmental biology at the Assistant Professor level beginning fall 2025. We welcome applications from researchers with expertise in any aspect across the breadth of developmental biology, from the cell and molecular level to the level of the whole organism or ecosystem. As biology has become more technology-driven, synthetic, and interdisciplinary, we envision that our new developmental biologist could cross traditional boundaries. Appropriate fields include but are not limited to cancer, aging, reproductive technology, regenerative medicine, and evolutionary development.

Ph.D. or ABD required. The applicant should have a strong commitment to research and undergraduate teaching; a research program that can easily accommodate and encourage undergraduates is crucial. Like all tenured and tenure track members of the department, the new hire would have a dedicated laboratory space in which to supervise independent study students as part of a thriving research program. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of strong teaching at the undergraduate level and experience mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, disability, and religion.

Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college with 2,200 students and 220 faculty. Mount Holyoke College is located about 90 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley, and is a member of the Five College Consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts.

The teaching load at Mount Holyoke College is 2/2. The candidate is expected to contribute to the Introductory Biology curriculum, intermediate core courses in Cell Biology and/or Molecular Genetics, and offer advanced elective course(s) in their area of expertise. Applicants will have the opportunity to participate in one or more Five College programs such as Culture, Health and Science; BioMathematical Sciences; Coastal and Marine Sciences; or Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice.

Applications must be made online by submitting a cover letter, a CV, and statements on the following: (1) teaching philosophy, (2) research plans, and (3) mentoring a diverse student body. Reference letters will be requested at a later date in the process. Applications submitted by October 1, 2024, will have priority for consideration.

Mount Holyoke College, the leading gender-diverse women’s college, is dedicated to providing equal employment opportunities for all individuals regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or any other legally protected status. We are a diverse community of staff, faculty, and students, united in our mission to offer an intellectually adventurous education in the liberal arts through academic programs that are renowned internationally for their cross-disciplinary excellence, experiential approach, and commitment to diversity.

Mount Holyoke College is a welcoming and inclusive environment that values and respects individuals of all backgrounds. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we encourage members of historically underrepresented groups or nontraditional backgrounds to apply for open positions at our institution. The College has a long-standing tradition of providing women and other historically underrepresented groups with access to an innovative educational experience that prepares students for purposeful leadership by integrating hands-on opportunities into the curriculum. We firmly believe that diversity enriches our community and enhances our ability to prepare students for success in an increasingly globalized world.
