GENERAL SUMMARY  

Under the guidance of the Director, Marketing and Communications, the Editor, Marketing and Communications, will serve as the primary m arketing storyteller for the museum, responsible for stewarding the museum’s brand through written content and creating valuable, engaging content for the museum’s key audiences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

  • Manage the DIA’s blog, including content strategy and updates to the site’s calendar and content.

  • Lead written content strategy for DIA marketing campaigns.

  • Create long-form content for the DIA blog through research and interviews.

  • Write and edit a variety of content for use in marketing materials and organizational communications highlighting DIA exhibitions, collections and galleries; community engagement programs and initiatives; public programs; director’s updates; and the DIA shop.

  • Write and edit biweekly DIA newsletter highlighting updates to programs, initiatives and events.

  • Manage content partnership opportunities, including coordination, editing and content guidance.

  • Oversee assignments, manage project deadlines, and provide editorial feedback or guidance to freelance writers.

  • Partner with Editor, Exhibitions, to maintain, update, and manage the DIA Written Style Guide for entire museum according to editorial industry best practices.

  • Partner with departmental colleagues to create and edit copy for marketing materials, including print programs, social media and website copy, press releases, and digital and physical advertisements.

  • Provide writing and editing support for museum projects, including impact reports, donor communications, educational guides , and staff communications .

  • Manage creation and editing of leadership remarks for events.

  • Upload content onto the DIA’s website.

  • Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.   

    QUALIFICATIONS    

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE   

    Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or related field required. Five (5) years of experience as an editor for an organization, media outlet or agency. Professional experience as a writer preferred. Experience writing about fine arts and/or museums desired. Additional years of experience can be substituted for the degree requirement.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES   

  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills to plan, manage, prioritize, and complete multiple on- going projects to meet deadlines and goals.

  • Ability to provide information, ideas, and instructions clearly, effectively, and professionally through talking or writing.

  • Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution, and recommend appropriate course of action.

  • Detailed knowledge of English usage, grammar, punctuation, spelling, proofreading, and standard editing symbols.

  • Knowledge of various style guidelines, including AP style, MLA and/or Chicago style.

  • Demonstrated ability to research, interview, write and edit complex, long-form content.

  • Must possess a demonstrated understanding of ethical business conduct and professional practices including maintenance and protection of confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to communicate with, manage and oversee freelance writers to meet expectations and deadlines.

  • Skills in collaborating across multiple organizational departments, including demonstrated ability to learn and write about complex initiatives for specific audiences.

  • Ability to communicate with, manage and oversee vendors or external partners to meet expectations and deadlines.

  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events (if needed) .

  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Office 365. 

  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive, and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
