Essential functions (job duties):

Wayne State University Law School seeks an Academic Services Officer II/III to serve in the capacity of the Law School’s Assistant Director of the Office of Career Success. Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean of Career Success, this position will counsel and advise students in the career and job search process, assist with the law school’s on-campus interview program, develop and speak at law school programs, assist with the collection of graduate employment data, conduct research for career and bar preparation initiatives for the office, and assist in implementing bar preparation programs.

Counsel and advise students through every phase of their career exploration and the job search process.

Review and provide feedback on student and alumni employment application materials.

Conduct mock interviews with students and alumni and provide feedback for enhancing interview performance.

Handle student walk-ins, telephone inquiries, and email requests from students, alumni, and employers.

Maintain positive relationships with Wayne Law student organizations to enhance students' knowledge of career planning, job search strategies, and employment opportunities.

Design, develop, and present career-related programs and workshops to meet the needs of students and alumni who want to pursue careers in law firms, public interest organizations, government, business & industry, and the judiciary.

Create career-related resources, including online guides related to judicial clerkship, law firm, public interest, government, and business & industry job search strategies and employment opportunities for students and alumni.

Develop and maintain effective relationships with legal employers, the judicial community, and relevant bar associations to facilitate networking and employment opportunities for students.

Assist with the administration of the law school’s on-campus interview programs.

Implement strategies that encourage employers to hire students and alumni.

Work cooperatively with law school faculty and staff to enhance career opportunities for students and alumni.

Remain current in local and national employment trends to enhance job search success, particularly as they relate to law firm, judicial clerkship, public interest, and government positions.

Assist in the collecting and maintaining of statistical data on student and graduate employment outcomes and bar passage.

Represent the Office of Career Success at internal and external events and programs, including Law School Open House events, Orientation for First-year students, bar preparation events, events hosted by Wayne Law, and events in the legal community.

Speak at Office of Career Success programs and events, including weekend and evening events.

Contribute to developing, coordinating, and implementing bar preparation support programming and services for Law School students both before and after graduation.

Contribute to hosting bar preparation programs for Law School students on topics relevant to bar passage.

Provide individual counseling services to Law School students on all content-related areas related to bar exam passage.

Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Unique duties:

Serve on Law School and University committees as assigned. Other duties as assigned by the Senior Assistant Dean of Career Success and the Law School Dean's Office related to employment, regulatory compliance, and bar examination support.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctor degree required from an ABA-accredited law school.

Minimum 1 to 3 years’ experience in higher education in relevant area: career services, bar exam preparation, curricular planning, student affairs or directly related experience. Law school experience, particularly in career services or bar preparation strongly preferred.

Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and efficiently prioritize workload.

Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents within the diverse Law School community, including students, staff, faculty, and administration.

Ability to work effectively with students of varying levels of academic preparedness and from diverse populations.

Availability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

Successful admission to state bar preferred.
