Boston, United States Northeastern University Full time

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities is a leader in the Experiential Liberal Arts. The College is strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcomes applications from members of groups underrepresented in higher education administration.

The College’s schools, departments, and programs—with disciplines ranging from economics and history to English, urban affairs and international affairs, form an interdisciplinary group of scholars with global perspectives and a culture of inclusion.  Our expert faculty connects liberal arts education with the challenges of our time, fostering ethical reasoning and critical thought, with attention to the enduring significance of history, literature, and culture.  Strategic Areas of Focus for the college’s education and research throughout its global network are (1) Resilience, Sustainability, Health, and Equity, (2) Cultural Transformations, Governance, and Globalization, and (3) Network Science, Computational Social Science, Digital Humanities, and Information Ethics.

CSSH has long been committed to creating a culture of inclusion for our students, faculty, and staff. Diversity and inclusion, as well as questions of race, racism, and anti-racism, are part of all our programs, all our research centers, our three areas of strategic focus—and are always work in progress. At the same time, we focus on how modes of constructing social hierarchies, including race, gender, sexuality, class, caste, and others, intersect with one another.

Responsibilities:

At the Department of Cultures, Societies, and Global Studies (CSGS), we
drive interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving on issues of pressing
concern to society at local, state, national, and international level – from
transportation, housing, energy and community development to social and
environmental justice, resilience and sustainability. This department is
home to the Africana Studies Program, Latino, Latin American and
Caribbean Studies Program, Global Asian Studies, the Spanish major, the
combined major in History, Culture and Law, and the combined program
in Health, Humanities and Society.

supporting the faculty and students who are working to address complex
problems, serve communities and build a just, sustainable, and resilient
world. This role oversees and provides advanced administrative support
for the Department as the administrative go-to person, including tracking
and maintaining Department and program budgets, financial transactions
and reimbursements, maintaining the Department calendar, coordinating
meetings and events, marketing and communications, and hiring and
supervising office staff (co-op/work study students and Administrative Coordinator). They will be the main source of information for department
faculty, disseminating key information to faculty and collecting information
in return. This role will track important personnel data for faculty and
assist the Department Chair with faculty hiring and searches.
The Administrative Officer will collaborate with a variety of contacts
throughout the college and University in the areas of Human Resources,
Marketing/Communications, Finance, Events, and Faculty Affairs.
Occasional evening work may be required to support departmental
events. For example, the recent bell hooks symposium organized by the
Africana Studies Program held at Northeastern's campus in Oakland,
California (Mills College).

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred, with 2 - 5 years of
progressively responsible administrative support experience, or
relative combination of education and experience required.
Experience working in higher education is a plus.
