Job SynopsisThe canning and trucking director will oversee MCC’s mobile canning and trucking operations. This position includes significant responsibility in several areas: ensuring regulatory compliance with government agencies and supervising all canning and related operations. The position supervises the Trucking and Logistics Coordinator, the Canning Relations Associate, and the Canner Operators. This position is the primary contact for all technical aspects related to the canning program. This position reports to the Co-Director for Donor Relations U.S.

Essential:

High School Diploma and 2 years of related experience. 1 year managerial experience.Ability to communicate sensitively and well with a wide variety of contacts. Proficient use of Excel, Word and Outlook. Capable of carrying up to 50+ pounds on occasion, with or without accommodation. Strong problem-solving skills.​ Able to analyze situations and develop action plans with necessary follow-through. Capable of independently making sound judgments and decisions.Ability to lead and relate well to multi-level stakeholders within and outside of the organization.
Preferred:
Associate degree or training in food safety. 1-3 years of experience with MCC meat canning and/or technical and mechanical training. 1-3 years of Food Safety and Inspection experience (working knowledge of HACCP, SSOP and/or FSEP). Experience driving semi-trucks

Key ResponsibiltiesProgram Management 50%, Technical 25%, Supervision and Training 25%.

Specific tasks and duties:
50% Program Management
Provide leadership, direction and vision to best guide program efforts to meet MCC’s goals.
Provide leadership to the Recall Team and engage concise and specific protocols in the event of a recall.
Ensure food safety regulatory compliance with USDA-FSIS (USA).
Conduct annual USDA reassessment activities for canning HACCP systems.
Provide leadership for USDA Food Safety Assessments.
Effectively communicate inspection results and action plans to the canning crew and canning committees.
Lead all aspects of production, including but not limited to production line design, equipment selection, operation, sanitation, and tear down; monitoring and verifying thermal processing and food safety; maintenance of project batch records, HACCP documents, thermal processing records, and GMP’s.
Maintain OSHA standards (lockout, tagout, etc.).
Develop and maintain contacts within the USDA to aid in MCC’s ongoing work.
Develop annual empty can/lid production schedule, in consultation with supplier.
Ensure supplies for canning (cans, lids, cartons, labels) are available and ordered from suppliers.
Maintain and develop new connections with meat suppliers, facilitating purchasing with committees as needed.
Provide required documentation for use on the canner throughout the season.
Plan and coordinate the meat canning schedule in consultation with the meat canning committees.
Establish income and expense budget, approve and monitor actual expenses for the program and prepare reports of receipts and expenses.
Determine, recommend and approve both short and long-term capital expenses.
Provide leadership and direction to warehouse staff on any canning related activities, including problem solving if abnormal containers are found.
Develop and maintain can inspection, incubation, pest control, and sanitation procedures for warehouses in the United States, in consultation with Ephrata MRC Warehouse Manager

25% Technical
Provide technical backup to the canners during the operating season., with training and support from Canning Program Consultant
 Respond as needed, at all hours, to any major or unusual breakdown or problem situations.
Establish financial and logistical priorities for maintenance efforts.
Schedule pressure vessel inspections, and make changes as needed.
Ensure that the maintenance schedules and licensing are maintained for the canner equipment, canner support vehicle, and semi-truck and trailers.

25% Supervision and training
Assist Canning Relations Associate in recruiting canner volunteers as requested.
In collaboration with the Canning Program Consultant, orient and train four Canner Operators including presenting “Better Processing Control School” to Canner Operators, administer tests, and report results to the appropriate authority for certification.
Regularly monitor canning crew interactions and be pro-active in addressing any issues or concerns.
Supervise and work closely with the Trucking and Logistics Coordinator and Canning Relations Associate, and Canning Operators
Ongoing training with canning committees, with support from Canning Program Consultant.
Work closely with Ephrata MRC Warehouse Manager to provide ongoing training with warehouse staff on can inspection and incubation procedures.

Supervision: This position directly supervises six employees in the US including the Trucking and Logistics Coordinator, the Canning Relations Associate (.25 FTE) and four Canning Operators. Canning team moves around US.

Travel expectations: Estimated 20-30% travel with 35-40 nights away per year. Travel is within the US.

Physical activity/demands: Occasional ascending or descending stairs/ladders or the like. Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds. Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds. Occasional exposure to low or high temperatures, outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind, a noisy work environment, hazardous conditions, poor ventilation, small and/or enclosed spaces. Constant staying in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Operating machinery and/or power tools. Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment. Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned.

Salary DetailsBase salary: $57,543.33. Starting salary may be adjusted up to $63,937.04 based on previous experience.
