This position serves as the primary Marine Investigator providing technical expertise and leadership to the Captain of the Port (COTP)/Officer in Charge Marine Inspection (OCMI) in all aspects of marine all aspects of marine casualty investigations. The Marine Investigator serves as the Civilian resident Prevention Department's source for continuity of investigation program policies, technical issues, special program support activity and is a primary contact with other Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies related to marine investigations.Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:
Performing or leading in the performance of the following investigation functions: Investigates deaths, injuries, property loss, and environmental damage to determine the associated human performance, equipment, and environmental casual factors and makes critical safety recommendations to prevent recurrence.
Investigating merchant mariner negligence, misconduct, incompetence, and dangerous drug use leading to appropriate remedial MMC suspension or revocation.
Investigating criminal and civil offenses for assessment of civil penalties or referral for criminal prosecution.
Issuing Notices of Violation and Letters of Warning.
Participating in public speaking appearances with members of various law enforcement groups, maritime companies, ship pilot associations and local government conferences.
