We are seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to manage development of functional safety cases, requirements, and review and verification of the same for fuel cell engines and its related sub-systems and components. The engineer in this position will own the systems engineering and requirements models used to formalize product architecture and requirements. The engineer will be capable of leveraging or developing model transformation utilities to develop a system of models elaborating upon Nuvera products. Long-term, the engineer will develop business systems and/or processes to expedite development of functional safety cases, requirements and verification campaigns against fuel cell power products.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement safety concepts and strategies for complex systems or products.

  • Conduct hazard and risk assessments according to relevant safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262 for automotive, IEC 13849 or 61508 for industrial systems).

  • Define safety requirements and ensure their integration into the design and development process.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify safety-critical components and functionalities.

  • Perform safety analyses such as SWIFT (Structured What-If Technique), DFMEA (Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), and BHA (Barrier Hazard Analysis).

  • Evaluate and validate safety architectures and designs to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.

  • Establish safety verification and validation plans, including test procedures and criteria.

  • Conduct safety audits and reviews throughout the development lifecycle to identify and mitigate safety risks.

  • Provide guidance and support to engineering teams on safety-related issues and best practices.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, advancements in safety technologies, and regulatory requirements to continuously improve safety processes and methodologies.

Required Job Qualifications (unless otherwise noted):

Educational Background

  • BS/MS in Engineering

Previous Work Experience

  • 3-5 years in systems engineering, with emphasis in functional safety, MBSE, and requirements engineering

Special Skills, Experience and Abilities

  • Experience working with requirements management/PLM software (e.g. Polarion)

  • Experience working with MBSE architecture software (e.g. Capella)

  • Experience working cross-functionally to gain agreement on deliverables

  • Proficiency in use of version control software (git, svn, perforce, etc.)

  • Experience in performing risk assessments, hazard analyses

  • Good communication and presentation skills

Physical requirements/Work environment

  • 90% office environment, 10% lab environment

  • Use of basic hand tools

  • Lifting light loads (< 20 lb)

Travel Required

  • Minimal travel expected
