The Early Preclinical Development team is seeking an Associate Director, Vivarium Oversight to oversee the daily activities of the animal care and husbandry contractors and ensure that all activities adhere to and comply with institutional Standard Operation Procedures and the requirements and regulations of Federal, State, and local agencies. Experience in vivarium operations, mouse colony maintenance, and rodent technical skills are required. Relevant certifications are preferred. The successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal skills in working with multiple teams and issues concurrently in a fast-paced work environment.

Job Description:

Provides leadership and day-to-day supervision to vivarium contractors and organizes governance of vivarium vendor to ensure expected performance.Manages budget and invoices management for vivarium, including equipment purchases and study supplies / consumables not managed by vivarium vendors.Provides researchers and animal research staff technical guidance and training to improve effectiveness, efficiency, completeness, and competence. Maintains and organizes records of animal care training required for researchers and animal care staff. Partners to operationalize the implementation of new animal procedures, ensuring training plans and records are in place.Maximizes workflow in vivarium throughput and scheduling of certain in vivo activities.Communicates regularly and works collaboratively with researchers to ensure that the company’s needs and goals are met.Responsible for AAALAC accreditation and renewal processes.Responsible for IACUC protocol oversight, including participation in site visits and inspections for IACUC and attending veterinarian.Ensures that all procedures performed in the vivarium and in vivo laboratories are conducted in compliance with Lilly policies and institutional, city, state and federal regulations and guidelines, including the institutional ACUC, SOPs, and study protocols.Elevates any animal health and welfare concerns through appropriate channels.Reports on the physical integrity of facilities and equipment and supports Facility Management and HSE Department on scheduling routine maintenance and repairs to facilitate daily operations in all aspects of the vivarium and in vivo laboratories.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 5 years of pharmaceutical industry experience.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

AALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician certified or eligible; CMAR (certified manager of animal resources) preferred.Must have working knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations, principles and techniques of laboratory animal husbandry, and the evaluation of animal health issues.Affinity for animals and respect for their welfare is essential.Must be familiar with concepts of 3Rs, culture of care, and culture of compliance.Strong operations knowledge and foundation in a research setting.Strong verbal and written communication skills required.Proven organizational and project leadership skills critical for executing complex and challenging projects.Demonstrates ability to work with oftentimes demanding or difficult clientele.Understanding of scientific design and methodology.Weekends and holiday support may be needed at times.
