What You Will Do:

The Licensed Counselor will play an integral role to optimize the student experience for those who need the most extensive wraparound service support. In order to better support our students with the highest needs, the Licensed Counselor will provide additional mental health counseling, both individual and in group settings, to referred students so that they can move toward successful completion of their degree. In addition, this role will also support by creating mental health related professional development as well as building protocols with Student Affairs to help students in crisis. The Licensed Counselor will also support students and the larger team by advocating and utilizing community resources to provide wraparound services and comprehensive case management.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide direct mental health counseling to students as identified by NLU. When appropriate, include wraparound resource support and solution-focused action planning.
  • Develop and engage in outreach efforts with the student population in order to lessen stigmas around seeking mental health counseling, including facilitating group sessions. Work closely with Student Affairs in order to better understand student population and specific needs and follow through on referrals.
  • Create and deliver quarterly mental health related professional development to staff and faculty; build protocols to help students in crisis; other related projects as needed.
  • Serve on necessary committee(s) and support other university initiatives (further developing resources for diverse student population).
  • Further develop wraparound supports for students to address environmental challenges: food pantry, homelessness advocacy and referrals, assisting with government assistance applications, substance abuse referrals; visiting all resources and organize by target neighborhoods.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree required. Must be a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Illinois.
  • 1-2 years of professional experience counseling or working as a social worker with young adults in a high school, higher education, or other related setting.
  • Must be passionate about and have specific experiences working with underrepresented and first-generation college students or equivalent high school population, and experience working with young adults who have experienced trauma.
  • Detail oriented, organized, and skilled at managing multiple projects in complex environments.
  • Comfortable with change and managing change with students.
  • Energized and supportive personality who is proactive at building relationships and changing student mindsets about seeking counseling and social work support.
  • Build and Apply Functional Expertise: Exhibits knowledge of their functional area and its processes, systems, and roles. Applies perspectives gained from research, other departments, districts and industries, and leverages best practices. Seeks to learn from others; Builds and leverages relationships and networks to grow in professional expertise.
  • Advocate for Project: Promotes programs and projects, both within and outside the organization, in a manner than increases understanding and support for these initiatives. Communicates with others in a way that raises visibility for, and interest in, products or projects. Ensures that the benefits of programs and projects are clearly understood and that they are received with enthusiasm and high expectations.
