Executive Director, Delivery Science

The Role:
Moderna is in search of a distinguished and visionary leader to serve as our Executive Director of Delivery Science. This critical position will spearhead the strategic advancement and operational excellence of our formulation and analytical platform, crucial for the expansion of our extensive vaccine and therapeutics pipeline. The Executive Director will be responsible for shaping and leading the nucleic acid delivery strategy, fostering conception of novel approaches and transforming them into groundbreaking scientific achievements.
As a core member of the Platform Leadership Team, the Executive Director will collaborate with top-tier senior leaders to craft and implement an integrated research strategy that propels Modernas platform technology. This role involves steering expansive, multi-disciplinary teams, nurturing a culture of innovation and curiosity, and driving the pursuit of scientific excellence and operational agility. In partnering with cross-functional leaders in the organization, such as with Platform Research, Technical Development and Therapeutic Area Research, the candidate will define the critical needs and priorities for inventing and improving robust delivery technologies for pipeline success.
Heres What Youll Do:
Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for delivery science, advancing both fundamental understanding and applied aspects of formulation and analytical science to invent and advance into technical development novel delivery vehicles for multiple nucleic acid cargos and cell targets
Lead team that advances lipid nanoparticle (LNP) composition and process evolution, develops novel analytical and biophysical approaches to characterize particles, and establishes pharmaceutical readiness for novel LNPs
Lead an organization of high performing formulation and analytical scientists who value working in a diverse and fast-paced environment, sharing the broader vision for our platform technology and inspiring scientists at all levels with commitment to our mission
As a member of the Platform Science and Research & Early Development Leadership teams, influence the broader strategic direction of Platform Science, including areas beyond your subject matter expertise, to achieve performance goals for our platform technology that will enable new therapeutic modalities and increased benefit to patients of our current portfolio
As a member of the Science & Technology Leadership Team, partner with Technical Development to fluidly transfer new technologies into clinical implementation
Champion a culture that values respectful and candid scientific debate, drives toward decision-making experiments, obsesses over learning from unexpected results, and celebrates both Go and No-Go decisions
Manage functional budgets, optimize resource allocation, and spearhead technological investments, including automation and digital transformation initiatives
Collaborate with Technical Development to accelerate technology transfer and provide scientific input on process improvements and approaches to scale by Technical Development colleagues based on fundamental technology understanding and continued research efforts
Remain at the forefront of drug delivery science, leading existing and identifying new strategic partnerships and elevating Modernas presence and impact through global scientific communications and publications
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
Ph.D. in chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, biomedical engineering, or related field with 17+ years of industry experience in a pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology environment
Experience with nanoparticle technology for drug delivery
Demonstrated leadership in managing teams within a matrixed organization
Proven track record of advancing scientific innovations from discovery through to clinical development
Deep knowledge of formulation discovery, biotechnology/pharmaceutical development, and delivery of novel drug modalities
Exceptional collaboration skills in a cross-functional matrixed environment
Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including a strong publication track record
Capacity to lead multiple projects in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment
Desired: Expertise in the fundamentals of drug development, including pharmacology and DMPK
