Boston, United States Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Full time

We currently have an opening for a Research Technician I in the lab of Dr. Tom Rapoport at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. The Rapoport lab is interested in uncovering fundamental aspects of cell biology, focusing on questions such as how proteins are transported across membranes, how misfolded proteins are degraded, and how different membrane-bound organelles, such as the endoplasmic reticulum, gain their unique shape. The lab uses a wide array of biochemical, structural, genetic, and imaging techniques to probe these questions. More information can be found on their website.

We are targeting a motivated, conscientious candidate who is eager to learn more about the world of membrane cell biology. All training will be provided, but a background in biochemistry, molecular biology, or cell biology is necessary. Responsibilities will include ~30% effort in general lab maintenance duties and ~70% effort in providing technical support for ongoing scientific projects. The laboratory is part of a dynamic scientific community at Harvard Medical School, and the position is an excellent stepping stone for recent B.S. graduates who would like to gain more research experience before pursuing graduate studies.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work directly with senior researchers on ongoing projects. Conduct experiments independently after proper training and consultation with the supervising researcher.

  • Perform experiments using techniques such as molecular cloning, protein purification, yeast genetics, mammalian tissue culture, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, or fluorescence imaging

  • Provide essential laboratory maintenance support such as ordering supplies, organizing reagent and equipment inventories, and making buffers and reagents

  • Participate and present data in lab meetings, attend departmental seminars, and review primary literature

You Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience and education) in biology or related discipline

  • At least one academic year or one full summer of undergraduate-level benchwork experience in a life sciences laboratory.

    • Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, or cell biology techniques is strongly preferred.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (or similar software).

  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail

  • Strong enthusiasm to master new techniques quickly, adapt from mistakes, and work independently as well as part of a team

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers; communication skills using the spoken and written word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move boxes and laboratory equipment weighing ~25 lbs. Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.

Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this position with reasonable accommodation. Requests for reasonable accommodation will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Please Note:

This job description sets forth the job’s principal duties, responsibilities, and requirements; it should not be construed as an exhaustive statement, however.  Unless they begin with the word “may,” the Essential Duties and Responsibilities described above are “essential functions” of the job, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
