Payroll Manager

Location: Downtown Sacramento, CA

Salary: $115k - $135k (Based on Experience)

Job Description:

As the Payroll Manager, you will oversee the end-to-end payroll process for both hourly and salaried employees, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely distribution of paychecks. This role requires someone with a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of payroll regulations, and the ability to lead a team effectively. You will be responsible for payroll system management, internal audits, compliance, and team development.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Payroll Operations: Direct and manage payroll processing, ensuring accurate and timely distribution of paychecks for all employees.
  • System Management: Maintain payroll data in Workday, conduct system testing, and implement payroll updates as required.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with Federal and state payroll tax regulations, conduct audits, and maintain internal procedures to meet corporate audit controls.
  • Team Development: Lead and develop a team of payroll specialists, setting payroll schedules and deadlines, and coordinating with HR and other departments.
  • Reconciliation and Audits: Assist in payroll bank and general ledger reconciliation, and collaborate with external auditors as needed.


Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in automated payroll processing, ideally in a manufacturing setting with 500+ employees.
  • Supervisory Experience: Minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role, with a proven track record of team leadership and development.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word, with experience using major payroll processing systems (Workday preferred).
  • Certification: FPC or CPP certification is desirable.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Thorough understanding of Federal and state payroll tax regulations and wage and hour laws.


Preferred Skills and Experiences:

  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Timekeeping Systems: Familiarity with Kronos and Workday payroll processes.
  • Multi-Jurisdictional Experience: Experience with multiple state and local jurisdictions.
  • Adaptability and Initiative: Ability to quickly learn new software applications and demonstrate initiative in addressing payroll-related challenges.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position requires managing a team of 2-4 employees, necessitating effective leadership and team management skills.
