Position Summary:
Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Group Fitness Coordinator is responsible for the management of day to day operations of the Group Fitness Program. The Group Fitness Coordinator is responsible for interviewing, hiring, training and evaluating employees as well as planning, assigning and directing work.
Essential Functions:
Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Group Fitness Instructors; recommend wage adjustments; provide ongoing performance feedback; schedule YMCA Fitness staff
Provide program managerial statistics to the Wellness Director
Create maintain a friendly atmosphere for all members and guests in the YMCA fitness area
Provide wellness education to participants in Group Fitness
Ensure equipment is safe, clean and operable; ensure necessary repairs are made
Meet with all instructors one-on-one at least once a month; offer assistance, encouragement and motivation; address complaints and resolve issues within the Group Fitness Program
Monitor instructors’ performance to ensure participation retention stays at or above 70%; appraise performance and/or discipline when appropriate
Contact participants periodically in Group Fitness to assure their needs are being met and they are receiving quality service; contact members who have not visited the YMCA on a frequent basis and invite them to participate in YMCA Group Fitness
Facilitate friendships between new and existing members
Assist with internal and external marketing of Group Fitness and fee-based programming
Understand, abide by, and enforce YMCA policies and procedures; explain positively and interpret policies to members
Attend staff meetings and training sessions
Qualifications
Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members and participants to create a culture of service within our Centers
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs, as well as the ability to use most office equipment is required
Minimum 18 years of age
High school diploma or equivalent required; degree in Exercise Science or related field OR YMCA Fitness Specialist Certification preferred
One specialty certification required (Zumba, Turbokick, Cycling, etc.)
Experience in group fitness is required
Certifications Required:
Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
Within 30 days of hire: CPR Pro/ First Aid/ AED
Within 90 days of hire: Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, Foundations of Listen First, Principles of Member Health and Wellness, Group Exercise at the Y, and Foundations of Group Exercise at the Y
Within six months of hire: National Certification (ACE, NDEITA, AFAA) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Group Fitness Instructor Certification
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
