JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State University Park is seeking a highly experienced student affairs leader and skilled administrator to serve as the Associate Vice President (AVP) with responsibility and oversight for a portfolio that focuses on student health and wellbeing. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the AVP is a member of the Student Affairs senior leadership team for a division of administrative units of over full-time and approximately 1, part-time staff. In addition, Student Affairs at University Park provides support for the student affairs operations at Commonwealth campuses. This senior leader will support the strategic initiatives around creating intentional co-curricular learning, advancing student world readiness, assisting students in overcoming barriers to success, fostering DEIB, and creating an environment that focuses on student well-being.

The AVP will be a collaborative leader who works well with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. Knowledgeable about current issues and best practices, this person will have significant student affairs and administrative experience in higher education and an advanced degree.

Specifically, this AVP will provide oversight for key units that focus on student health and well-being including University Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services (including the Center of Collegiate Mental Health), Campus Recreation, and Health Promotion and Wellness. Other areas that may be included are some of the following: Residence Life, student government and fee board advising, Commonwealth Campus Support, facilities oversight, shared oversight for World Campus student affairs, and providing leadership with the VP for the student affairs budget and development efforts. 

Responsibilities include:

Serve as a senior leader of Student Affairs providing insight, lending support, and collaborating across the division and the University

Provide strategic leadership and oversight for student health and well-being and the Flourish Penn State initiative with a lens toward student success, equity, and student learning

Provide supervision to the directors of University Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services (including the Center of Collegiate Mental Health), Campus Recreation, and Health Promotion and Wellness

Represent the Vice President for Student Affairs on university working groups and committees

Support human resources, budget planning and management, and strategic planning within the units

Provide support and structure to Commonwealth Campus colleagues working in student health and well-being

Work closely with student governments, the related student advisory boards, and other student leaders

Qualifications:

Typically requires a master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field with a minimum of years of experience of administrative and leadership experience in higher education with progressive responsibility. Doctorate preferred.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Proven success in a management/leadership role

Thorough understanding and knowledge of student affairs and college health and mental health – comprehensive wellness, equity and access, students in crisis, assessment, risk management

A high level of cultural competence in working with diverse populations

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Experience in engaging with student leaders

Strategic planning, budgeting, and financial management experience

Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, administration, and community partners

Knowledge of and experience in the oversight of some or all of the following areas: counseling and mental health, collegiate health services, campus recreation, health promotion, and wellness
