Job Summary

This position supervises and coordinates work schedules for mechanics engaged in the repair and maintenance of school buses, automobiles, trucks and other division owned equipment to ensure their safety and availability to provide prompt and efficient transportation for WJCC students and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Ensures timely opening and closing of the shop. Directs work assignments of mechanics and parts room specialist in performing their duties. Maintains records of operational costs and maintenance performed on all buses, automobiles, trucks and other division owned equipment. Monitor warranties to ensure parts and equipment under warranty are serviced as required. Recommends policies for inspection, maintenance, and repair of vehicles. Directs the purchase of supplies, tools, and motor vehicular parts as required. Ensures that all tools and equipment are secured in proper locations and that the shop is clean and free of safety hazards. Provides input and specifications for purchases such as chassis, bus bodies, shop equipment, support vehicles, etc. Analyzes defective equipment to determine cause of trouble. Inspects repaired vehicles to verify quality of work. Responds to emergency vehicular breakdowns in the field after regular hours and during weekends and makes repairs as required. Responds to accident scenes to ascertain amount and extent of damage received by vehicles and completes related reports as required. Maintains accurate fuel tank levels to ensure availability of gas and diesel products. Evaluates performance of workers; recommends the selection of new mechanics for hiring. Analyzes all units, recommends which vehicles should be sent to an outside body shop/ repair facility. Completes State inspection reports; ensures that State inspection book is maintained accurately and up-to-date. Monitors state inspection sticker program monthly. Maintain underground storage tank records for Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Maintain sufficient inventory on all engine oil, grease, antifreeze and other petroleum products. Monitor market prices on gas and diesel. Provide monthly reports i.e. fuel usage, fuel received equipment status and vehicle status. Assure the 30-day bus servicing schedule is adhered to for all buses. Monitor servicing on all other school division vehicles. Provide accurate and up to date information for the State Department of Education. Assign buses to drivers based on their route, number of children, special needs, etc. Assist as needed during emergencies such as bomb threat or severe weather evacuations. Assist the Director of Transportation is surveying road conditions during inclement weather. Answer shop/parts room phones handling routine and emergency calls as needed. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and at least four years of vehicle maintenance experience in a supervisory category, preferably in a school bus maintenance shop. Extensive knowledge and maintenance experience working with gasoline and diesel engine maintenance. Must possess the ability to supervise and evaluate employees and delegate work assignments. Must be physically able to perform daily duties and must comply with the drug and alcohol testing requirements as outlined by DOT regulations. Within 90 days of employment must have met requirements for and received a commercial driver’s license (CDL) issued by the State of Virginia with necessary endorsements to operate a school bus, carrying passengers and equipment with air brakes. Employees whose CDL is either revoked, suspended or rendered invalid are subject to termination. Maintains and monitors an annual shop budget. Possession of the State Inspector’s Certification. Must have a good driving record based upon Williamsburg-James City County School criteria. Knowledge of the theory, application, diagnostics, and troubleshooting associated with automotive electrical systems, gasoline and diesel fuel systems, and air/hydraulic brake systems. Ability to provide direction and guidance to others. Knowledge of safety procedure involved in the safe operation of all shop equipment such as lifts jacks, power tools and machines. Ability to read and understand service manuals and test equipment instructions.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Frequent interruptions, changing priorities, and attention to detail. Requires considerable contact with parts and supply vendors. Requires that some duties be performed outside normal work hours such as evenings, nights and weekends, in order to respond to emergency road situation. Requires performing duties in various types of environmental conditions ranging from extreme heat to very cold both indoors and outside. Physical and mental dexterity required.
