The Manager, Organ Machine Perfusion will directly oversee the implementation and use of machine perfusion technologies, resources and systems to increase the utilization of organs for transplant under the direct supervision of the Senior Director, Organ Surgical Services. The Manager, Organ Machine Perfusion, is responsible for the day-to-day responsibilities of machine organ preservation, both in situ and ex situ. The Manager will also develop organ perfusion and standard operating procedures, inventory and supply requirements and determine transportation and logistics needs related to Organ Machine Perfusion.  The Manager, Organ Machine Perfusion will execute initiatives to support the vison of Organ Donation Services and advocate for the resources necessary to support those initiatives. The Manager, Organ Machine Perfusion will also be responsible for hiring, training and oversight of Organ Machine Perfusion Specialist(s).

FOCUS AREAS/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Supervision:

  • Supervises and provides support to the Organ Machine Perfusion Specialist(s), including but not limited to, monthly rounding meetings, onboarding/orientation, training, professional development, and performance coaching. Provides a monthly scouting report to the Senior Director, Organ Surgical Services as well as to the Senior Vice President, Organ Utilization as requested.
  • Works collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams to plan and implement strategies that involve the use of Machine Perfusion.
  • Partners with Human Resources to address all employee relations issues in accordance with NEDS policy, procedure, and practice.
  • Uses conflict resolution and negotiation skills to resolve issues that arise both within and with other departments.
  • Leads organized and focused quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assures that continuous performance feedback is provided to all Organ Machine Perfusion Specialist(s) in accordance with NEDS practice and policy and escalates issues to Senior Director, Organ Surgical Services as appropriate.

Administrative:

  • Author of department SOPs. Manages procedural changes, form updates and the creation of revision process for SOPs in consultation with the Senior Director, Organ Surgical Services.
  • Identifies actual and potential problems, collects data, and proposes solutions.
  • Assists with preparation, justification and monitoring of Organ Donation Services annual budget.
  • Conducts internal department auditing as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Manager, Organ Recovery and the Organ Surgical Recovery team to optimize process efficiency.
  • Collaborates with the Quality Safety team to optimize the quality of clinical services and ensure safety of transplant recipients.
  • Assists in processing machine perfusion services, supplies and resources invoices in a timely manner and in collaboration with NEDS Finance Department.
  • Collaborates on the creation of meeting agendas with the Manager, Organ Recovery for Organ Recovery Team Meetings and attends regularly scheduled organizational meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Organ Surgical Services and/or Senior Vice President, Organ Utilization.

Training:

  • Ensures that all SOP’s and applicable standards, policies and regulations are communicated, trained, and practiced by staff involved in Organ Machine Perfusion.
  • In collaboration with Hospital Donation Strategy provides education related to Organ Machine Perfusion strategies for staff in NEDS donor hospitals.
  • Prepares and conducts presentations or trainings within the organization, at local learning sessions and at national meetings as requested.  

Clinical:

  • Acts in the role of an Organ Machine Perfusion Specialist as necessary to conduct Normothermic Regional Perfusion as well as Ex Situ Machine Perfusion of Organs.

 


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to lead a team in a positive manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage priorities/demands and work independently.

  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, email, and the ability to learn NEDS’ internal systems including, but not limited to, True North.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in organ and/or tissue recovery.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:   

  • Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) or Certified Transplant Preservationist (CTP) certification from the American Board for Transplant Certification (ABTC) required within 18 months of hire.
  • Required to travel by NEDS authorized vehicles to meet the duties and responsibilities of this position. Must maintain the requirements of an “eligible driver” including maintaining an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) per NEDS automobile policy.
  • Valid state driver’s license required.

  • Lift/Move donors and supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit, stand, or bend for an extended period of time.
  • Carry objects such as equipment used for recoveries.
  • May need to meet these physical demands for an extended period of time.
  • Protect against exposure to blood or body fluids by following established procedures to identify the appropriate personal protective measures to be used when performing the essential functions of your position.
