Overview

Western and Southern Financial Group is a Fortune 500 company and worldwide life insurance industry leader with over $50 billion of life insurance inforce. Gerber Life is a subsidiary offering protection for the entire family with over 3.8 million active insurance policies. Gerber Life primarily distributes insurance products through direct marketing and agency methods. A custom modernized sales software platform created by the IT Application Development & Solutions Delivery (ADSD) Team runs all new business and underwriting operations. ADSD performs all custom application development on the new platform; specification & design through release management and production application support. The Sr. Manager of Enterprise Business Architecture plays a key role for the company as a member of ADSD cultivating the sales platform through hands-on analysis, configuration and specification of features required to meet the business needs of the enterprise. The role is ultimately responsible for positioning life insurance solutions for delivery by engineering teams and verifying whether or not the new software behavior enacted meets intended quality and benefit realization objectives. The ideal candidate is a direct-to-consumer (DTC) and alternate distribution life insurance operations expert by trade with extensive infrastructure, application, integration, data, and security technology expertise. A deep track record of success pushing the organization to envision forward thinking solutions and working with large-scale digital life insurance engineering teams to ensure desired outcomes are met is mandatory. Deriving and refining product backlogs aligned with schedule and cost estimates across the entire project portfolio while overseeing direct reports to do the same is critical. Intellectual curiosity, an unquenchable thirst for applying technology solutions to drive revenue, savings and productivity gains in a fast-paced agile environment are key traits for performing well in this position.

Responsibilities

Application Development Configures 100% of all life insurance new product development and existing product management updates on the sales platform by using SQL to retrieve, update, test and promote product specifications between environments. Analyzes, configures and works with engineers to manage 100% of all new business and underwriting rules by using Eclipse to view, update test and promote all sales platform rules between environments. Transforms high level business needs into unambiguous technical delivery instructions for engineers. Business Architecture Management Responsible for continuous improvement and support of the custom sales platform which processes 100% of Gerber Life’s direct to consumer (DTC) and alternate distribution (agency) new business and underwriting transactions (~750K life insurance applications per year). Employs technology to optimize the sales process for all active Gerber Life products while ensuring uninterrupted new business and underwriting processing across the entire custom platform software suite including: a digital independent agent portal (50K users), internal agent contact center sales portal (500 users), an operations portal for entry of paper life insurance applications, an underwriting workbench supporting both distribution channels and one set of DTC web desktop applications and another set of DTC mobile applications. SME and leader of business architecture culture, methods and practices for the enterprise. Identifies insurance operations trends, opportunities and strategic options for satisfying business demand by proposing technology innovation possibilities. Communicates knowledge of data sets shared across the enterprise and the relationships between. Utilizes model-based representations that can be adjusted as required to collect, aggregate or disaggregate complex and conflicting information about the business. Visualizes and creates high-level models that can be used in future analysis to extend and mature the business architecture. Quantifies and establishes measurements to assess if software changes realize intended benefits for the entire ADSD portfolio aligning key business strategies to key business performance metrics. Curates a product backlog and provides technology investment benefit realization transparency for the organization. Individually owns execution of high-impact, enterprise wide, strategic programs or initiatives while overseeing and guiding direct reports to do the same. Ensures work products delivered meet intended outcomes within budget and schedule baselines. Drives continuous experimentation and empirical process control fostering transparency inspection and adaptation for the purpose of unlocking business value through the introduction of technology changes that solve long-standing business problems. Works closely with SLT providing options for employing technology for competitive advantage. Works closely with ADSD engineers to alter system behavior to yield incremental value. Drives effective collaboration and communications between customer, delivery, and acceptance communities. Develops scenarios and creates corresponding test data to be incorporated into plans. Prepares, coordinates and launches both business and IT initiatives. Improves quality by tracking errors and formulates a plan to prevent future errors of the same type. Solutions Delivery Leadership Relentlessly fosters ADSD collaboration and exchange of ideas for achieving swift ADSD and cross-team decision-making for evolving the platform in the best interest of the business. Continuously evaluates team dynamics and intervenes to improve the effectiveness, quality and rate at which Gerber Life can introduce software change for business impact. Educates other groups on ADSD delivery process to set expectations and understanding for efficient management of resources Creates and sustains impeccable working relationships with all ADSD team members and provides both technical and professional guidance to all direct reports, subordinates and ADSD peers. Works closely with business architecture, marketing and sales leadership providing options for employing technology for incremental revenue and competitive advantage. Openly accepts direction and constantly seeks direction from the engineering team for all platform improvement requests received from business partners as well as the accompanying solutions devised and proposed by ADSD engineers. Leads by example by working directly with delivery and acceptance teams to deliver desired outcomes. Must be viewed as a leader in the enterprise by the IT organization, customers and management. Evaluates new prevailing technologies fitness for use and practices experimentation as a core means of determining technology direction.

Qualifications

Master's Degree : Less than a Master’s degree may be acceptable if accompanied by other technical training, relevant certifications, or extensive experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance (Required) 15+ years of hands on business architecture management experience 15+ years of large-scale public facing e-commerce experience 10+ years managing a team of business architects utilizing with agile delivery frameworks including Scrum, LeSS, Lean, XP, Kanban, FDD, BDD and supporting tools (Cucumber, JIRA) 10+ years experience with hybrid software delivery experience (utilizing Waterfall to work with Sr. Leadership Teams in parallel with Agile Teams on a daily basis) 5+ years authoring and maintaining feature files for engineering team delivery 5+ years utilization specifying API and UI test automation and relying on results for quality control (Required) 10+ years direct marketing and life insurance industry experience 10+ years of new business, underwriting and policy administration software development experience 10+ years direct marketing experience (Required) Enterprise systems thinking - specifically the ability to see how individual systems and applications and parts interact with the enterprise (big picture thinking). Comprehensive knowledge of infrastructure, applications, integration, design patterns, database, agile delivery methods, build and deployment processes, software development and systems engineering. Ability to develop a wide range of architecture documents (application and infrastructure design documents). Exceptional executive-level communication skills (written / oral) and ability to communicate complex technical information to all stakeholders, including those who do not have a technical background. Must be a team player able to work effectively at all levels of an organization. Must be an effective technology leader able to build & maintain solid working relationships across the organization. Must have an agile mindset and passion for innovation, agile delivery methods and continuous integration. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Creative, open-minded and ability to work under indirect supervision. Physical and Environmental Requirements

Works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time while working at a desk, on a computer or with other standard office equipment, or while in meetings. Requires the ability to verbally communicate and exchange accurate information to customers and associates on a regular basis. Requires visual acuity to read and interpret a variety of correspondence, procedures, reports and forms via paper and electronic documents, visual inspection involving small defects; small parts, and/or operation of machinery (including inspection); using measurement devices continuously.
