About Evansville State Hospital

Evansville State Hospital is one of the Indiana State Psychiatric Hospitals who are committed to the mission of Hope and Recovery. Residing on 88 acres on the east side of Evansville, Ind., our facility provides medical treatment for chronic mental illness and substance abuse disorders from our dedicated team of psychiatrists and advanced practice professionals. Active Treatment helps our patients achieve their goals directed towards living in the most non-restrictive environment possible.

Our team of professionals assist our patients in the treatment process involving medical staff, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation therapy and our community integration program. Evansville State Hospital continues to maintain accreditation through The Joint Commission as an Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital as well as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services certification as a Psychiatric Medicare/Medicaid Hospital.

 

Role Overview

The Superintendent is responsible for leading, administering, directing, and coordinating all activities of the State Psychiatric Facilities as stated in law, and as prescribed by the Deputy Director to ensure the execution of effective treatment and community integration. 

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $120,016.00, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Provide leadership to hospital staff to ensure attainable goals and objectives for effective and efficient hospital operation.
  • Provision of a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-oriented environment for patients, staff, and the public.
  • Maintain standards of accrediting, regulatory, and certifying agencies for the hospital.
  • Develop and implement the hospital strategic plan within the overall framework of the Division.
  • Serve as the appointing authority for the hospital.
  • Oversee financial management of the hospital following mandates of statutes, State Budget Agency, and the Division to ensure fiscal soundness and operations within appropriated budget.
  • Chairs various hospital committees, including Governing Body, Senior Executive Board, and other workgroups as needed.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • A Master's Degree in Health Care Administration preferred; MBA, MPH, or masters in a related field preferred.
  • Membership in the Academy of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) is preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible healthcare experience, with at least five years in top-level healthcare management.
  • Significant management experience in an extensive inpatient psychiatric setting.
  • Working knowledge of licensing and/or accrediting body regulations and interpretive guidelines, including the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), is required.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate with various stakeholders, including patients, families, employees, medical staff, gatekeepers, and Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA) staff.
  • Extensive knowledge of State Hospital operations, management, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Thorough knowledge of budgeting and finances related to operations of a psychiatric hospital within the State of Indiana.
  • Extensive knowledge of principles of public administration and ability to supervise, plan, organize, and coordinate the program and activities of staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of administrative and personnel techniques related to the supervision and direction of departments.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to analyze staff, operations, and program needs and effectiveness and to formulate plans for change to carry out the hospital's mission more adequately.
  • Ability to cope with unexpected and unforeseen difficulties that periodically arise.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and methodology of administrative management;
  • Specialized knowledge of state government administrative structures;
  • Ability to coordinate and motivate diverse, professional, and support personnel;
  • Ability to be creative in developing alternatives to meet the department’s needs;
  • Ability to maintain cooperative work relationships.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
