Spectrum Center's program specialist for student engagement and belonging leads programs and support services focused on the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. Working closely with the program manager for events and partnerships, the person in this position designs initiatives promoting a sense of belonging and thriving for students of all identities, with a particular focus on students who are queer, trans, Black, indigenous, and people of color (QTBIPOC). They support collaboration between Spectrum Center, Trotter Multicultural Center, and Multi-Ethnic Students Affairs, and between Spectrum Center and student organizations focused on race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. Alongside Spectrum Center staff team, they employ an intersectional lens to enact the mission of Spectrum Center and our program learning outcomes. 

Responsibilities*

Programming (65%)

Work with staff from Spectrum Center and campus partners to successfully plan, execute and assess quality programs and services designed to enhance student intercultural development and increase social justice education opportunities. Manage programming designed to center and support QTBIPOC students and students with multiple marginalized identities. Implement new programming that facilitates community building and fosters a sense of belonging across and among students with a focus on QTBIPOC students and students with other historically marginalized identities. Create opportunities for QTBIPOC students to connect with QTBIPOC staff, faculty, and alumnx, as well as students from other colleges and universities. Serve as a trip facilitator for Spectrum Center student travel opportunities (e.g. conferences) as assigned by Spectrum leadership. In collaboration with the program manager for events and partnerships, support Spectrum Center programs and events. Some events will be held on evenings and weekends. In collaboration with the director and associate director, support programmatic efforts to improve campus climate. Formally and informally advise and collaborate with student organizations, including the Queer and Trans Campus Collective. Provide one-on-one support, mentorship, and guidance to students. Collaborate with Student Life and external partners to successfully plan, execute and assess divisional programs. In consultation with the communications strategist, maintain and update marketing and outreach including social media, website, and print/promotional materials. Serve as a member of the Spectrum Center Programming Team.

Administration (20%)

Provide administrative support for the Spectrum Center Programming staff team. Maintain complete and accurate records of programs, events, services, and financial transitions. Collect relevant program and partnership data to inform Spectrum Center metrics. Assist the associate director with student needs assessment, as related to support services, and benchmarking research, in effort to best serve students. Research relevant good practices to inform Spectrum Center methods in holistic support programming. Provide professional development and support for the Spectrum Center student staff team on racial justice, intersectionality, and supporting students from presently and/or historically marginalized groups. Collaborate with center leadership to plan all-staff meetings and trainings. Serve on committees as a representative of Spectrum Center as assigned by Spectrum leadership. Engage in ongoing professional development, including at least one training or conference each year.

All Staff Responsibilities (15%)

Assist in the development of a unit culture that is student-centered and amplifies student learning and leadership. Take responsibility for fostering a positive workplace in which staff and students feel engaged and empowered. Provide mentorship, support, and guidance to students. Host weekly virtual office hours for students seeking support. Provide resources to individual students, responding effectively to needs/concerns. Facilitate assigned workshops and trainings. Attend professional staff, all-staff, team, and supervisory meetings. Facilitate and plan meetings as assigned. Publicly represent and answer questions about the center at informational campus and community events. Attend university programs, events, and educational opportunities at the direction of center leadership. Help with front desk coverage as needed.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g. higher education, student affairs, women's, gender, and sexuality studies, social work, sociology, LGBTQIA2S+ studies, cultural or ethnic studies, or other fields related to the position responsibilities). Experience planning events. Demonstrated knowledge of gender and sexuality. Demonstrated knowledge of race and ethnicity.
 

Desired Qualifications*

Master's degree in a related field. An understanding of student development theory and practice. Experience working with student organizations in an advisory capacity. Experience planning events and programs for students in a higher education setting. Familiarity with gender, sexuality, and student identity development models. Demonstrated effectiveness in building community, and designing and implementing initiatives. Experience working in a college or university gender and sexuality center, multicultural center, or related area as a professional or as a student employee. A willingness to work in a variety of different capacities to improve the success of the Spectrum Center and multicultural programs. Demonstrated knowledge of the purpose(s) and function(s) of LGBT campus centers.
