The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

Job Goal: 

To lead and coordinate the planning, implementing, and evaluating programs tailored for English language learners (ELLs), ensuring alignment with federal and state standards. Responsibilities include collaborating with stakeholders at the team, school, and district levels to observe, consult, and support administrators, teacher leaders, and educators of ELLs, including ESL teachers, SPED teachers, and classroom teachers. Additionally, coaching ESL teachers on practical social and academic language instruction methods, researching instructional programs and classroom strategies, and developing professional development initiatives aimed at implementing successful systems of change. The Lead ESL Teacher will also spearhead the development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and refinement of professional development programs focused on maximizing LEP students' potential for English-language acquisition and academic success at the team, school, and district levels.

Essential Functions: 

Lead, Coordinate, and Collaborate with Teams at School Level and System-Wide:

Take a leadership role in organizing and leading team meetings to analyze ELL assessment data, review student work, and plan differentiated instruction at both the school level and system-wide. Coordinate with school leadership, district personnel, and Special Education (SPED) teams to develop and implement strategies for improving outcomes for ELLs with diverse learning needs across the district. Collaborate with teams of educators, administrators, SPED, and support staff to ensure a coordinated and cohesive approach to supporting ELL students' academic and linguistic development.

Facilitate Professional Development and Collaboration:

Provide leadership in conducting peer coaching sessions to collaboratively plan, deliver, and analyze lessons, emphasizing high-yield instructional strategies for supporting ELLs. Lead professional development sessions on ELL program requirements, evidence-based instructional practices, and effective strategies for supporting students with diverse learning needs, with a focus on adult learning principles. Design, develop, and implement ELL professional development programs to enhance educators' capacity to meet the needs of ELL students, incorporating adult learning principles.

Support Leadership and Student Development:

Collaborate closely with principals, school leadership, and SPED coordinators to develop and implement strategies for improving outcomes for ELLs with diverse learning needs at the school level. Offer guidance and support to school leadership in understanding and implementing ELL program requirements, inclusive practices, high-yield instructional strategies, and SIOP. Lead initiatives to promote the academic, linguistic, and social-emotional development of all ELL students, including those with disabilities or other special learning needs, across the district.

Student Growth and Development:

Analyze student achievement data to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to support student growth at both the school level and system-wide, with a focus on high-yield instructional strategies and SIOP. Support the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process and collaborate with SPED teams to ensure that ELL students receive appropriate interventions and accommodations to meet their individual needs. Lead efforts to showcase and celebrate the academic performance of all ELL students, including those with disabilities, highlighting their achievements at both the school and district levels.

Communication and Liaison:

Maintain open and transparent communication channels with parents, principals, colleagues, district personnel, and SPED teams. Act as a liaison between the school and district personnel regarding ELL programs, inclusive practices, and collaborative efforts to support students with diverse learning needs. Foster partnerships with community organizations, advocacy groups, and stakeholders to support the needs of all ELL students and their families at both the school and district levels.

Program Development and Evaluation:

Lead efforts to design, develop, and implement instructional programs tailored to the needs of English language learners, integrating high-yield instructional strategies, SIOP principles, and inclusive practices. Coordinate program evaluation efforts to ensure that ELL programs are effective, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all students, including those with disabilities or other special learning needs. Stay informed about emerging trends in ELL education, inclusive practices, SIOP Model, and evidence-based instructional strategies, providing leadership and guidance to district personnel, school-based teams, and SPED specialists.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education. 3-5 years effective teaching experience preferred as evident by favorable references, portfolio, evaluations Experience as a teacher leader as evidenced by student achievement data and other impact data included in a professional portfolio Masters Degree in Education or related field (or plan of study on file and active progression to complete degree program) in an agreed upon timeframe Maintains Kansas Teaching License in appropriate content area and level. Demonstrated expertise in one or more content areas Demonstrated effective coaching practices Demonstrated ability to design, implement effective instruction resulting in students meeting or exceeding standards Excellent verbal and written communication skills 

REASONING ABILITY :

Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS :

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

COMMUNICATION :

Maintains communication with teachers and other school personnel to enhance cooperative action to meet students' educational needs. Maintains confidentiality regarding educational records.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : 186 days with an extended contract for additional days. Flexible daily and yearly schedule established by the Director of Multilingual Education & Services based on a regularly reviewed work plan.

SALARY : Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule with a consideration for a supplemental contract for additional duties.

REPORTS TO : Building Principal and the Director of Diploma+ Instructional Programs.

EVALUATION : Performance is evaluated by the Building Principal in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy.
