JOB SUMMARY:

Teachers are directly responsible to the building principal(s) for classroom instruction and supervision of students. The teachers’ main responsibility is to lead students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, social and career development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teachers shall make it their duty and responsibility to be in their assigned places at least fifteen minutes before the opening of class sessions in the morning and a reasonable time before the opening of class sessions in the afternoon, unless they are serving at stations of duty elsewhere at the time. Teachers will be expected to remain at least fifteen minutes after the close of the school day. Teachers shall attend promptly all meetings called by the principal or superintendent. Teachers shall devote themselves during school hours to the duties of their respective assignments and shall give careful attention to instruction, discipline, manner, and habits of their pupils. Teachers shall be held responsible for the discipline of their respective classrooms. Teachers are not to exclude pupils from classes at random. They may invite the aid and counsel of the principal on questions of discipline and may refer cases of special misconduct to him/her or his/her delegated representative for their attention. A report of each case, signed by the teachers, shall be filed with the principal. No teacher shall exclude a pupil from class without some definite arrangement to provide for the excluded pupil to spend his/her time during the period of exclusion. Teachers are expected to become familiar with the Board policies, rules, and regulations and the districts course of study so that they may be able to carry these into effective operation. When teachers note that injury is done, either by intention or accident, to the school building, furniture, apparatus, or other school property, they shall give prompt notice of the incident to the principal. It shall be the duty of the teachers to take care the school building, furniture, apparatus, or other school property is not damaged by pupils under their supervision. Teachers should report any misconduct of pupils at any time or place while under the responsibility of the school authorities as are now or may be hereafter defined by law. It shall be the duty of each teacher to report to the principal any pupil whose progress or advancement warrants reclassifications, or who, from any cause, fails to do properly the work of his/her class at any time. Teachers shall see to it that their rooms are properly lighted, heated, and ventilated. When this not the case, the problem should be reported to the building principal and through him to the maintenance department. No teacher shall be absent from his/her classroom without due notification to the principal. When school is closed to permit attendance at authorized teachers’ meetings, for which days teachers receive a salary, attendance is expected each day. A teacher may elect to report to school on such days for purposes of work in lieu of attendance at these meetings. Persons who do not attend the meeting or who do not report to school will accept a reduction in salary equal to one day’s pay for each day of non-attendance. Teachers shall keep such records, make such reports to the office and to parents and guardians, and perform other duties as the principal or superintendent may require for the effective operation of the school. No teacher shall resign without giving thirty (30) days written notice to the superintendent, in default of which unearned salary shall be forfeited. Teachers may be assigned to ad hoc committees as needed. Teachers may be assigned to lunchroom duty with reference to subsections A & B. Subsection A: Principals will schedule teachers with a minimum of a 30 minute duty-free daily lunch period. Subsection B: A typical situation may result in variations to normal scheduling. Each building will develop a schedule for certificated staff that will insure adequate supervision in an emergency. Children must be supervised by a legally certificated teacher when required by state statutes or regulations. Aides and other designated personnel may assist in the supervision of children on the playgrounds, playroom, the lunchroom and hallways. Schools with transported students must have teachers assigned for supervisory duty from the time the first bus arrives in the morning until the time the last bus leaves in the evening. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedure of the school district. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers. Adapt the curriculum to provide individual, small-group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual pupil. Evaluates each pupil’s growth in knowledge and skills in courses being taught. Assists pupils in selection and development of individual research projects. Encourages pupils to think independently and to express original ideas. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress. Administers or monitors group tests. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupils’ activities. Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities. In the event the principal must be absent from the building, a person will be designated to fulfill the principal’s duties during the period of absence. Other duties as assigned by the Administration.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree or higher. Appropriate Missouri teaching certification.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, and interact effectively with all aspects of the school community is required. Ability to solve conflicts, maintain confidentiality and remain open to various ideas and viewpoints.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Ability to use and teach mathematics commensurate with assigned position.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while complying with established policies and procedures of the building and district. Identifies and resolve problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully; uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics. Ability to concentrate, think, read and learn is necessary to perform the essential job duties.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must have a physical exam and TB test prior to first day of work at the employer’s expense. Demonstrate organizational ability and attention to detail. Ability to provide assistance to the school community as necessary. Ability to work independently. Excellent human relation skills. Knowledge of office equipment (computers, copiers, fax machine, and related items).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly sit, talk, listen, and respond. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee will regularly stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, precise hand-eye coordination and the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Occasionally, the employee may lift up to 50 pounds, such as, to lift files, papers, and equipment.
