Role Summary:
This role is primarily a support function directly accountable to the classroom educator and, when applicable, to other professional support staff (such as guidance counselors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and/or speech therapists).
Location: Northwest Tri-county Intermediate Unit 5
Average Weekly Hours: 35
Compensation and Benefits:
Single EIPA Certification Hourly Rate: $23.75
RID or Dual EIPA Certification Hourly Rate: $25.75
Work Schedule: 185 days per year
Leave Benefits: 10 Sick Days, 4 Personal/Emergency Days annually (pro-rated for the remainder of the school year)
Health Benefits: Comprehensive Medical-PPO, Dental, Prescription, and Vision Insurance for Employee and Dependents after 30 days (with a monthly premium of $35.00 plus deductible)
Pension Contribution: Required minimum 7.5% contribution to the Pennsylvania School Employees Retirement System (PSERS).
Essential Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Achieve and provide evidence of a score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at the Elementary grade level.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build rapport with students and all members of the educational community requiring the interpreter's assistance.
- Actively support the roles shared by the teacher of the hearing-impaired and the classroom teachers, including:
1. Interpreting class content information
2. Avoiding disciplinary actions towards students
3. Not taking responsibility for initially teaching content to hearing-impaired students
4. Familiarizing oneself with content prior to class presentations to understand signs unique to the subject matter through ongoing communication with educators
5. Reviewing content with students post-class to ensure comprehension
6. Upholding the privacy rights of hearing-impaired students and maintaining confidentiality
- Refrain from passing judgment on teaching methods or styles.
- Communicate relevant information to hearing-impaired students regarding school functions, activities, assignments, announcements, and other pertinent information for their inclusion in school activities.
- Participate in curriculum-related activities where the interpreter's presence is necessary to effectively communicate content to hearing-impaired students (e.g., field trips and other approved curriculum activities).
- Attend meetings during the school day where the interpreter is needed to facilitate communication for hearing-impaired students (e.g., IEP, disciplinary, parent, guidance meetings).
- Assist hearing-impaired students in obtaining missed information or assignments from classroom teachers following absences.
- Provide feedback to the teacher of the hearing-impaired regarding strategies to enhance the student's inclusion in the curriculum and activities.
- Offer insights to the teacher regarding the student's performance with the interpreter and address concerns related to the student's communication needs for the IEP annual review.
- Assist with the evacuation of identified hearing-impaired students during emergencies or drills.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the teacher or support professional, with approval from the Program Supervisor.
