Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Development, this position will participate in setting the strategic direction of fundraising efforts as a member of the Michigan Medicine Regional Gift team. The Associate Director manages outreach in Southeast Michigan with a focus on Washtenaw County, developing a portfolio to increase support for institutional priorities, medical education support, research, patient care and other priorities established by leadership of the University of Michigan Medical School and Michigan Medicine. The position also requires collaboration with other gift officers in obtaining major gifts to support scholarships and student support, professorships, research, faculty and trainee support, patient care and capital. Travel across Southeast Michigan is required. In addition to these efforts, the Associate Director may also focus a portion of their time engaging faculty leadership within specific departments to increase philanthropic support for these areas.

Responsibilities*

Strategic Planning

Create and implement a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising plan to increase philanthropic support for key institutional priorities, education, research and patient care from grateful patients, alumni and friends in coordination and collaboration with the Director of Development and other leaders. Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime giving potential of individual prospects. Aggressively identify, and formally qualify, new major and planned gift prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategy, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making significant gifts. Develop expertise in areas of opportunity that potentially increase support for institutional priorities, education, research, and patient care.
 

Donor & Prospect Management

Personally maintain a portfolio of approximately major and planned gift prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers spending approximately 80% of time on direct fundraising efforts. Conduct a minimum of - face to face visits with prospects and donors per year and participate in approximately 15 ? 30 solicitations per year, focused on gifts of $K - $K or more.  Increase philanthropic support for students, research, translational science, faculty, patient care and capital for the benefit of Michigan Medicine. Work closely with specific department leaders to develop strategies and engagement opportunities with trainees, grateful patients and others focused on increasing philanthropic support to benefit the department and associated programs. Provide volunteer/fundraising board staff support and lead both internal and external groups in the identification, qualification, and evaluation of major, principal, and planned gift prospects.  Provide guidance for fundraising committees and related events and activities led by volunteers whose goal it is to support Michigan Medicine.  Have a comprehensive understanding of the Medical School and Michigan Medicine Development priorities. Make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific medical development and University needs. Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate, or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship. 
 

Collaboration

Work collaboratively with other development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Michigan Medicine campaign goals. Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other Michigan Medicine Development units, the Office of University Development, and appropriate schools and colleges across the University to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving fundraising goals and objectives.  Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout the Medical Campus and University, by demonstrating leadership in the development community. Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Michigan Medicine Development values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

Participate in Medical Development events as appropriate. Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree. At least five years of progressively responsible development experience in an academic health system or similar setting with a comprehensive development program. Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy with a commitment to confidentiality. Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts. Proven success working in a multifaceted development environment and the ability to think strategically in a complex academic environment. Experience working in healthcare fundraising including proven experience with securing gifts of $K and more. Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine, and mature personal style. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively with others. Ability to travel frequently and adjust schedules to meet donor needs. Working on site three days per week at the Michigan Medicine Development Offices. Reliable internet service.

Desired Qualifications*

Master's Degree. Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies, and procedures.

Work Locations

The onsite location for this position is an office suite at the Building. This provides free, on-site parking for staff.
This position is a flexible, hybrid position. Candidates will need to live in a commutable distance to the office and the expectation is to work from the office 3 days a week, except while traveling on university business. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on business needs.
