The Electrophysiology Device Specialist provides direct and indirect care of patients with cardiac pacemakers and automatic internal cardiac defibrillator systems, in accordance with the departmental process. Serves as an advocate and liaison between patients, staff, physician and external customers by sharing necessary information to ensure continuity of care. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to insure effective efficient and safe patient care: Electrophysiologist, Cardiologists, Surgeons, Cardiac Nurses and Devise Nurses and device staff in other clinics and functions as a part of a first response team.

Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.

The Electrophysiology Device Specialist responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

* Evaluates, manages and provides support in the delivery of quality clinical care of patients with cardiac pacemakers and automatic internal cardiac defibrillator systems.

* Demonstrates knowledge of devices, the effects of devices and utilizes critical thinking skills. Very specialized in health care procedures and how electronic medical devices function.

* Performs an independent daily review of remote transmission of the devices implanted within patients. Correlates information with the clinical condition of patients to assist in the management of arrhythmias.

* Responsible for performing interrogations and necessary reprogramming of devices in patients are scheduled in the office setting including urgent walk in appointments, according to type of device, insurance restrictions and patient needs.

* Able to interpret arrhythmias, troubleshoot and reprogram settings of pacemaker defibrillator according to patients needs and department protocols.

* Consistently encourage questions from patient and their families and offers guidance that fosters compliance. Also, provides patient educations on all aspect of heart pacing appropriate to patients level of understanding.

* Responsible for documenting patient contacts in regards to any company recalls thus requiring closer and more frequent monitoring and taking appropriate measures for any further changes in the device that may be required.

* Performs trans-telephonic checks on pacemaker patients requiring this mode of follow up due to age/type of pacemaker in between office follow up visits to check basic function and generator battery life status. Provides these report to physicians

* Assures the accuracy and completeness of message. Triages and prioritizes messages, communicating information to providers/patients in a timely manner. Demonstrates triage skills pertinent to determining normal and abnormal conditions. Reviews information regarding the patients device, health history, medication and all information pertaining to the patients heart failure status.

* Communicates effectively with internal and external customers, transfers calls when appropriate, staying on the line and announcing where any why the call was transferred.

* Completes and submits all charges generated for device interrogations and remote checks services provide in the device clinic. Reports to assigned Supervisor or Manager.

Frequent exposure to possibility of electrical shock by plugging/unplugging equipment in a wide range of situations and locations. Frequent exposure to infectious patients with a variety of diseases inclusive of: HIV, Hepatitis, Herpes, Tuberculosis, CMV, Upper Respiratory Infections, Blood Borne Pathogens and other infectious materials as defined by OSHA. Occasional exposure to blood and body fluids. Occasionally exposed to sight of blood, smell of burnt flesh, patient incontinence, patients on respirators, surgical patients. Exposed to constant interruptions in performance of office duties. Daily exposed to corrosive disinfectants when cleansing equipment for entry and exit of surgery or isolation areas. Occasionally required to work on very sick and uncooperative neonates and children.

Required to work a variety of shifts. Required to wear universal safety protective clothing when required.

* Bachelors degree preferred

* 3 years experience in the cardiac device/arrhythmia field preferred

* Previous experience with programmable electronic cardiac systems and program software.

* Previous clinical cardiovascular experience preferred.

* Training in Dysrhythmia recognition within 90 days of employment

* CPR and introduction to code training and simulation to be obtained within 90 days of employment

* Previous computer experience preferred * Must be able to communicate effectively in English
