Job Description

:Responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the medical affairs of the hospital to assist the hospital in achieving its goals of quality patient care, improved clinical outcomes, customer service, and medical expense management. Demonstrates leadership in communicating the hospital's core mission, vision and values and system-wide goals. In collaboration with other members of the leadership team, is accountable for the overall success of the facility, including but not limited to, clinical competency of medical staff, medical staff recruitment, credentialing and privileging plus inter-hospital, intradepartmental, and community relationships, goal achievement and goal alignment with physicians. Serves as liaison between medical staff and administration to bring medical staff issues and concerns forward to Administration.

Scope

Functions according to established description of services prescribed by his/her contract. Serves as a non-voting ex-officio member of the Medical Executive Committee and as a non-voting member of all other Medical Staff committees at facility. Participates in the development of the operating and capital budgets.

Job Essentials

Provides medical direction to the medical staff in conformance with facility policies and procedures established by the facility, applicable standards of The Joint Commission and all applicable requirements of federal, state, or local laws, rules, and/or regulations, or third party reimbursement sources (public or private) covering Medical Director's services. Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of all patient care and clinical performance, clinical programs and clinical board goals. Makes recommendations for improvement as needed. Promotes the use of clinically relevant and valid standards of care, guidelines and criteria through the clinical programs. Leads the process improvement activities for the Medical Staff and those with departmental clinical privileges in the improvement of both clinical and non-clinical processes to promote better outcomes. Assists in the development of written medical policies for the facility and with the President of the Medical Staff determines that the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and other such guidelines that affect the Medical Staff are appropriate to providing high quality care. Coordinates the credentialing and privileging of physicians and allied health professionals. Assists with strategic and medical staff planning for the facility. Attends various meetings at facility to provide medical direction to facility staff. Develops the Medical Staff Leadership program. Mentors and supports new medical staff leaders. Serves as an interface between Medical Staff and facility administration. Keeps accurate and complete records to ensure compliance with all facility, governmental and applicable JCAHO record keeping and recording requirements. Assists the facility in providing the most cost effective and appropriate care and promoting use of the facility when hospital care is needed. Cooperates with other physicians on the staff to provide medical support for the facility so that at least one physician shall remain available to meet the needs of the facility. Participates in the development of the operating and capital budgets. Determines the need for necessary equipment and supplies and submits requisitions for them to facility administration. May perform clinical services including diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of conditions requiring medical care. Consults with other physicians as requested and provides referring physicians and/or facility with written reports on results of examinations.



Minimum Qualifications

or with Board certification in his/her specialty. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.

Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Utah.

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.

Demonstrated competence in his/her field of practice.
- and -
Holds medical staff privileges at assigned hospital.
- and -
Three years of experience in medical staff leadership.
- and -
Experience in a role requiring a collaborative style and ability to work effectively with colleagues.
- and -
Experience in a role requiring effective conflict resolution skills to work effectively with difficult issues.
- and -
Experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a medical director and president of medical staff.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

May be expected to stand or bend (while performing surgery) in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
