Minimum Qualifications:

SC certification in Secondary Administration required

Seven years instructional experience with at least three years in an instructional supervisory capacity, preferably as a secondary administrator

Demonstrated success in the area of student achievement in a school or district setting

Knowledge of training and development for secondary teachers and administrators

Knowledge of principal and teacher evaluation methods for secondary

Knowledge of secondary curriculum development and evaluation

Knowledge of current innovative secondary teaching methods

Skill in dealing with secondary principals and others in a variety of problem areas

Skill in oral and written communication

Skill in working with many levels and diverse publics inside and outside the district

Strong interpersonal skills

Ability to motivate secondary teachers and administrators to utilize new methods

Ability to work in an unstructured work situation with only broad supervision

Outstanding references from current and former supervisors

Satisfactory SLED (SC Law Enforcement Division) report

Salary Range: Administrative Scale

Length of Contract: 12 months

JOB DESCRIPTION

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SECONDARY EDUCATION

Purpose Statement:

The job of Executive Director of Secondary Education is for the purpose/s of directing the implementation of curriculum and instructional programs among secondary schools and focuses on assisting the schools to address school and district goals.

This job reports to the Associate Superintendent for Instruction and Accountability.

Essential Functions

Provides assistance and direction to secondary principals in developing programs for students, teachers, and staff consistent with the District Strategic Plan and the School Renewal Plans. Confers with appropriate instructional consultants in specialized subject matter and program areas for the purpose of supporting the District Strategic Plan and the School Renewal Plans. Counsels secondary principals on continuous school improvement and monitoring those measured set in each School Renewal Plan. Uses knowledge of a variety of curriculum techniques to orient and advise principals on implementing and maintaining instructional programs. Reviews literature in the field and attends seminars and workshops to remain knowledgeable of innovative and current curriculum improvement programs. Maintains files on such programs. Corresponds with innovators in the field. Where feasible, visits other school systems to inspect and observe improved methods of instruction and curriculum. Disseminates findings to concerned principals for the purpose of conveying information and/or recommendations regarding district curriculum. Participates in secondary program evaluation. Conducts training as necessary. Aids principals in formulating specific activities designed to implement the District Strategic Plan and School Renewal Plan. Receives requests from secondary principals requiring district approval regarding a variety of instructional matters such as distribution of various materials and contest requests. Consults appropriate policies and approves or disapproves requests for the purpose of carrying out objectives within areas of responsibility. Supervises secondary curriculum or program areas as assigned for the purpose of maintaining instructional curriculum which conforms to district, state and federal requirements. Assists with secondary principal evaluation as directed by the Associate Superintendent for Instruction and Accountability for the purpose of ensuring department and individual performance objectives are met.
