Position Description

The Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (full-time, tenure-track) in sound studies and/or sound art, beginning in August of 2024.

We seek a sonic artist with an expansive view of the field. Areas of practice include all forms of sound arts including installation, performance, new media, and related areas. Conceptual rigor and creative experimentation are highly valued qualities.

The successful candidate will be expected to offer and develop undergraduate and graduate studio and research courses in sound art, sound studies, audio engineering, and sound design. An established record of exhibitions, performances and/or research is required. The position includes teaching courses in sound across programs and areas and supervising students with diverse interests in new media art, the humanities, technology, and related emerging areas.

Preference will be given to candidates with research interests in areas such as Emerging areas of Sound, Sound art installations, Sound and new media art, Experimental music, or Sound and audio in media and technology. Faculty members are expected to develop creative works or research programs that are nationally recognized for innovation and excellence. This position will require teaching four courses annually at the undergraduate and graduate level in addition to university service, scholarly research, and/or creative practice.

The appointment commences for the fall 2024 semester.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: An MFA or PhD or equivalent in Sound Studies, Sound Art, New Media with a sound emphasis, or a related discipline is required prior to employment; those with ABD status will be considered at the application/interviewing stage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred Education and Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with research interests in areas such as emerging areas of sound, sound art installations, sound and new media art, experimental music, or sound and audio in media and technology. Desired technical skills for a candidate seeking this position may include audio engineering; sound synthesis; Max/MSP; Pure Data; generative AI; Touch Designer, or other audio programming environments; or Electroacoustic composition.
The Program and School

Design + Creative Practice inspires students to blend art, technology, design, engineering, science, and the humanities to create innovative solutions. They develop their skills in UX/UI design, video production, sound design, and digital fabrication.

The Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology (Bass School) is a community of scholars, artists, and creative practitioners defined by their creativity, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding. Within the context of a Carnegie R1 doctoral research institution, the Bass School fosters the fluid movement between traditional disciplines and cutting-edge experimental investigation of emerging technologies.
