Summary

The Center for Respiratory Virus Research and Response (MCRVRR) is seeking 1-2 dependable and highly organized temporary Research Assistants with several years of phlebotomy experience to assist on our NIH/CDC-funded respiratory virus research studies. The Research Assistant II will be the main phlebotomist for our longitudinal cohort study and will work under the direction of the Center Manager and study project managers.

The temporary Research Assistants will work at the School of Public Health in the Center's blood draw lab. They will be responsible for drawing on children and adults who are enrolled in the study. The candidate will be required to ensure that samples are labeled correctly and transported to the Center's on-site laboratory. This temporary position is during the influenza season and spans September - August with periods of fewer blood draws.

Families in this longitudinal cohort are invited to come in for blood draws multiple times each year. We're looking for a candidate who is personable and experienced at phlebotomy to support continued collections. You would likely be the only phlebotomist during your shift. Blood draws are scheduled seasonally (busiest Sept-Dec and May-Aug, with slowest times between Jan-May). During times of reduced blood draw operations, the schedule could be shifted or there may be opportunities to assist with other research related tasks.

Responsibilities*

Obtain blood specimens from enrolled study participants via venipuncture. Handle all specimens according to research protocol, prepare specimens for transport and ensure delivery to Center's on-site laboratory in a timely manner. Monitor supply inventory and replenish supplies as needed. Model professional and respectful behavior at all times; provide excellent customer service. Retention of study subjects is paramount. Collect and record data accurately and timely, maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of participant information. Maintain strict adherence to study protocols, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements.  Collaborate with the research team to ensure that study activities are being completed on time. Schedule and coordinate participant calls, ensuring efficient communication and organization. Provide support and guidance to participants, addressing any concerns or inquiries they may have during the study. Maintain effective communication and collaboration with team members. Assist with research related tasks as needed and depending on experience and skills.

Required Qualifications*

At least two years of consistent phlebotomy experience in a clinic or research setting (at least 20 hours/week); familiarity with drawing on children and adults and difficult "sticks". Ability to adhere to safety guidelines and procedures, promoting a safe and healthy environment for participants and staff and maintain patient/participant confidentiality. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with people. Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills are necessary in order to work effectively with study participants and the Center research team. Proficiency in basic computer skills including, data entry, Google Suite products, email and Microsoft products.  Ability to work independently, demonstrating strong ability to prioritize tasks, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.
