Description
of ResponsibilitiesThe Assistant Research Professor will join a diverse team working across disciplines to study health in older adulthood. The successful candidate will lead research on healthy aging by compiling data from the HRS, PREHCO, CRELES, and MHAS to study whether and how kinlessness is shaped by migration dynamics and the effect on health using a cross-national comparison focus. Further, the candidate will employ mathematical demography models to estimate and project the future composition of kinship networks in collaboration with faculty members at the Department of Sociology and Criminology, the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, the Population Research Institute, and an international team of formal demographers. Previous training in formal demography and kinship models is preferred.
Most of the work will be conducted in close collaboration with Dr. Ashton M. Verdery and Dr. Alexis R. Santos.
The position will be based at Penn State’s University Park campus.
Requirements
The Assistant Research Professor should possess a Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Public Health, Population Health, Gerontology, Demography, or a related field. The Assistant Research Professor should have demonstrated ability as a researcher by having published in peer-reviewed outlets and participated in conferences, be familiar with NIH funding mechanisms, and be able to serve as PI or Co-I for research grants. In addition to the area of specialization, the ideal candidate should have a basic understanding of the demography of Puerto Rico and Latin America, and family demography.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with the HRS data and other sister studies
Capable of analyzing data from multiple waves of these datasets
Proficiency in STATA, R, or a statistical software that allows for the production of a replicable code
Knowledge of the demographic literature about Puerto Rico and Latin America (in both English and Spanish)
Job Duties
Lead research projects using population-level datasets
Perform research using empirical methods and forecasting packages
An ability to work in interdisciplinary settings
Strong written and oral communication skills
Evidence of collaborative research skills
Experience with forecast methods emphasizing kinship dynamics
