The Veterinary Assistant I supports the Lead Veterinarian and other Veterinary Technicians in all aspects of animal care to ensure animals receive the care and attention needed. This position typically feeds and bathes animals and clean cages and kennels to keep pets clean and safe while in our care.

Veterinary Assistants should have overall education/experience in veterinary health and handling of a variety of domestic, exotic, and large animal species with emphasis on assisting the entire veterinary team. This position in the hospital performs tasks that are structured and designed to provide training and experience in the appropriate unit. Tasks are performed under direct supervision and detailed instruction and guidance is received. Employees in this class learn to apply established practices and methods directly related to the assignment.

Radiation Oncology unit
This position will serve as the communicator between clients and the radiation oncology unit. The position will help with patient intake and with associated paperwork. The position will be responsible for making a brief assessment and reporting results to supervisors. This position will assist with anesthesia, but not be the primary anesthetist. This position relieves some responsibility from the clinical oncology nurses (VTH-Oncology). However, by enhancing the communication between the client, the oncology service and the radiation oncology group, the work flow and client service should be enhanced.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

This position has an Essential Services designation, meaning this position is required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare. Required Job Qualifications HS Diploma or GED plus one year of experience caring for animals or providing animal handling duties OR HS Diploma or GED and a combination of related education and/or experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to one year. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not sponsor a visa for this position. Essential Duties Job Duty Category Patient Care Duty/Responsibility This position works with guidance and direct supervision of Radiation Oncology (RO) Faculty and staff. Assist in patient admit and discharge. Provide peri-radiation care, feeding and walking radiation patients. Promote the comfort and overall well-being of radiation patients. Assist in the transport of patients as needed. Provide basic animal care including feeding/watering, exercising, observation, bathing, and elimination. Properly restrain and transport animals using Fear Free techniques. Perform basic physical examinations and recognizing normal versus abnormal values. Monitor, record, and report patient signs and patient condition to the patient care team (veterinary technicians and DVMs). Percentage Of Time 30% Job Duty Category Client Communication Duty/Responsibility Serve as the main communicator between clients and the radiation oncology unit (maintain appropriate communication with clients and patient care team, including students, staff and clinicians. Help with patient intake and with associated paperwork. Responsible for making a brief assessment and reporting results to supervisors. Percentage Of Time 40% Job Duty Category Documentation and Billing Duty/Responsibility Record clinical information and maintain accurate medical records (includes entering charges, scanning records, etc.), and assists radiation oncology and medical oncology staff in ensuring that patients are charged appropriately. Percentage Of Time 10% Job Duty Category Laboratory Assistance Duty/Responsibility Assist in surgical preparation including sterilization of instrumentation and supplies, patient preparation, patient placement, and surgical suite equipment maintenance. Assist in a variety of laboratory set-up procedures including urinalysis, fecals, and blood samples. Perform radiology safety measures and assist with the completion of diagnostic radiographs. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Perform regular cleaning of clinical space (including exam rooms, cages, runs, stalls, procedure/treatment rooms, staff areas). Clean and sterilize equipment. Organize and stock work environment. Perform inventory procedures, labeling and packaging dispensed drugs, supplies, and equipment. Percentage Of Time 10% Job Duty Category Anesthesia Duty/Responsibility Assist in anesthesia, including induction, maintenance and recovery. This position will not be the primary anesthetist. Percentage Of Time 5% Job Duty Category Research Duty/Responsibility Provide assistance to the technician or PI during the ongoing clinical trials, including communicating with those parties and with the clinical trials service.
