Description

DEFINITION:  
 
Performs a variety of specialized duties related to the care and education of young children ranging from 6-months through preschool age and the training of college students at the Child Development Center and Parent Support Center.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
 
Supervision is provided by the Director of the Child Development Center or Assistant Director of the Child Development Center.
 
Work direction is provided by appropriate child development faculty.
 
Provides work direction to student workers and college students in child development courses.

WORK SCHEDULE
This is a temporary substitute position on an as needed basis. Schedule will vary as needed for coverage.
 

Examples of Duties

Creates portfolios for children to document each child's growth and development, including anecdotal notes, photos, videos, and work samples. 
 
Assesses assigned children's social, emotional, cognitive and physical development using the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP); uses these assessment results to guide curriculum planning.
 
Scores and assesses developmental screenings (, Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3 and ASQ-SE)) to identify health or developmental factors related to a child's learning or development.
 
Delivers curriculum covering all areas of child development including social, emotional, cognitive physical, literacy, and language.
 
Performs daily care routines with children (, diapering, grooming, feeding, and toileting) in compliance with District, State, and Federal established laws, codes, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and requirements (, Title 22 Division 12 of the California Code of Regulations and The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Early Learning Program Accreditation Standards).
 
Interacts with children in a developmentally appropriate manner, including acknowledging children's emotions and redirecting challenging behaviors in accordance with the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) to promote a positive climate in the classroom,
 
Serves simple nutritional meals and designated snacks to children, including monitoring children's consumption of meals, ensuring children's participation in setting and cleaning up for each meal, and recording meal count in accordance with Federal food and nutrition guidelines (, Title 7 Code of Federal Regulations) and Child Care and Adult Food Program (CACFP) requirements.
 
Provides work direction to and mentors college students assigned to the Child Development Center, including monitoring and recording students' lab, volunteer, and work hours and reviewing and evaluating student prepared lesson plans based on faculty prepared rubrics. May provide work direction to and mentor college students assigned to the Parent Support Center.
 
Prepares and provides input on safe, effective, and supportive environments for learning by setting up and supervising interest centers (, art, science, and block centers) and exhibits of children's work in accordance with process quality standards as assessed by the Infant/Toddler Environmental Rating Scale (ITERS), Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), and Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS).
 
Maintains departmental areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition including cleaning up classrooms, outdoor play areas, workrooms, and kitchens as well as sanitizing toys and play equipment with safe and proper cleaning solutions in order to ensure compliance with established District, State, and other safety procedures and regulations (, Title 22; Division 12 of the California Code of Regulations, NAEYC Program Accreditation Standards, and Early Head Start/Head Start performance standards).
 
Maintains documentation and records including those related to home visits, attendance, curriculum, daily care routines, and parent conferences as required by established State procedures and regulations and early childhood education standards [, Title 22; Division 12 of the California Code of Regulations NAEYC Program Accreditation Standards, PITC Six Essential Policies, Early Head Start/Head Start performance standards, and Quality Start Los Angeles's Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS)].
 
Verifies time sheets for student workers.
 
Performs related duties as assigned.
 

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
 
Child development theories and practices.
 
Daily care activities appropriate for young children.
 
District, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, policies, procedures, and requirements pertaining to child care programs (, Title 22; Division 12 of the California Code of Regulations, and Title 7; Code of Federal Regulations).
 
Early childhood education standards (, NAEYC Program Accreditation Standards, Early Head Start/Head Start Performance Standards, and Program for Infant Toddler Care (PITC) Six Essential Policies).
 
Developmentally appropriate methods for interacting with young children.
 
The Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) and the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3 and ASQ-SE) as used to evaluate young children's social, emotional, cognitive, literacy and language, communication, gross and fine motor, problem solving, and physical development.
 
Quality standards for child development as assessed by Child Development Program Assessment Tools (, ITERS, CLASS, and ECERS).
 
Effective team teaching skills for working with staff members, students and families.
 
Health and safety guidelines pertaining to childcare programs as delineated by State regulations (, Title 22 Division 12 of the California Code of Regulations).
 
Safe and proper methods to sanitize toys and play equipment.
 
Effective electronic and physical documentation and recordkeeping techniques
 
Ability to:
 
Interact with young children in a developmentally appropriate manner.
 
Interpret and apply child development and emergent curriculum theories and practices, child assessment results, and the California Foundations and Curriculum Framework to the preparation of curriculum for young children.
 
Perform daily care activities appropriate for young children.
 
Interpret and apply District, State, and Federal established laws, codes, regulations, policies, procedures, and requirements and early childhood education standards pertaining to child care programs.
 
Interpret and utilize child development program assessment tools to assess learning environments conducive to learning.
 
Interpret and apply the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) and the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3 and ASQ-SE) to assess young children.
 
Serve basic meals for young children.
 
Observe and document children's growth and development.
 
Accurately maintain physical and electronic files and records.
 
Model positive behaviors to young children.
 
Redirect challenging behaviors from children.
 
Evaluate student work pertaining to child development.
 
Set up and maintain clean and safe program facilities.
 
Sanitize toys and play equipment in a safe and proper manner.
 
Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, using tact, patience, and courtesy.
 
Understand and follow written and oral directions.
 
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
 
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
 
Train and provide work direction to others.
 
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
 
Minimum Qualifications:
 
Valid Child Development Teacher Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
 
Six (6) units of coursework in Infant /Toddler Care.

Current certificate in pediatric first aid and pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation issued by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association, or by a training program that has been approved by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority.
 
16 hours of California Emergency Medical Services Authority approved training on preventive health practices. The training must include: 4 hours of pediatric First Aid, 4 hours of pediatric CPR/AED, and 8 hours of Preventative health and Safety practices approved by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority from an accredited college, university, or program within the last two years.
 
Desirable Qualifications:
 
Valid Master Teacher Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
 
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
 
Child Development Center laboratory school program is subject to childhood communicable diseases.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
 
Preventive health practice training must be renewed every two years by completing 4 hours of pediatric First Aid and 4 hours of pediatric CPR from a California Emergency Medical Services Authority approved program.
 
Immunizations as outlined by Senate Bill No. 792 required upon employment.
