The Department of Enrichment and Extended Learning is responsible for the planning and oversight of afterschool, vacation, and summer learning opportunities that meet the unique needs and pathways for students attending Holyoke Public Schools. We believe that if we:

  • Identify the knowledge and skills needed for students to step up successfully and develop a project-based, standards-aligned curriculum across all grade levels
  • Embed research best practices throughout every aspect of program design
  • Engage CBOs and other enrichment providers in planning and implementing bold, innovative, project-based, and standards informed enrichment
  • Engage and support the best teachers through high-quality curriculum resources, professional learning, and ongoing observation and feedback
  • Involve and build relationships with students and families throughout the process

Holyoke Public Schools offers programming that reinforces skills learned during the school year that will strengthen as areas of growth while providing learners with a supportive environment for students to develop their academic and social emotional growth.

Description: The Academic Coordinator, reporting directly to the Manager of Enrichment and Extended Learning will coordinate academic services within the summer program. The academic coordinator will serve as a liaison to the Academic Team alongside the Manager of Enrichment and Extended Learning in order to ensure the academic time in the summer program is designed to align with the school improvement plan and district’s turnaround plan in order to help students meet rigorous educational standards and achieve academic excellence.

This is an ideal position for an innovative HPS teacher or leader with a proven ability to improve learning outcomes for all students and demonstrated potential as an instructional leader. The academic coordinator should have a strong belief that all students can succeed and a strong sense of urgency in achieving this goal. The academic coordinator is collaborative, flexible, has a growth mindset, and possesses the ability to coach other certified and noncertified teachers. The academic coordinator should have experience analyzing academic and non-academic data, planning and facilitating small group instruction, and analyzing lesson plans across content areas. Prior experience coaching teachers is preferred.



Responsibilities are aligned to the Turnaround Plan and include but are not limited to:

Pre-Program Work

  • Engage in curriculum development and planning with the manager of Extended Learning, academic directors and executive directors of academics, and school leaders
  • Provide curriculum orientation and professional development sessions to all teaching staff
  • Provide coaching and model lessons for teachers
  • Review and provide feedback to teachers on summer lesson plans
  • The academic coordinator oversees and ensures the accountability of teaching staff through effective management and comprehensive review processes.
  • Prepares professional development with the Manager of Extended Learning, Academic Directors, executive directors, and school leaders.

Provide instructional leadership:

  • Coordinate the academic portion of the summer program
  • Design intervention groups and support teachers in planning targeted, project-based, learning activities for these groups
  • Enhance the consistency and rigor of summer classrooms by implementing the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, which include Common Core Standards in alignment with the standards and benchmarks where students require the most support
  • Support and inspire teachers to continuously improve planning and instruction through coaching, feedback, resources, training, and evaluation
  • Support a culture that utilizes performance and other quantitative and qualitative data at the program, grade, and student-levels to understand students' needs, help teachers improve instruction, and monitor teacher/student progress
  • Develop, implement, and revise the summer curriculum as needed
  • Conduct regular formal and informal academic teacher observations and feedback on lesson plans
  • Actively supervise and evaluate the academic component of the summer program

Build and cultivate a high-performing and collaborative school culture:

  • Maintain high expectations for the achievement of all students, particularly the traditionally underserved student populations (i.e., students with disabilities, limited language proficiency, and low socioeconomic status)
  • Effectively plan and lead planning meetings and PD sessions for academic support teachers and enrichment instructors that prioritize high-quality, project-based, instruction through the lens of 21CCLC Exemplary Elements
  • Facilitate program staff in examining academic and non-academic data and monitoring the progress of students enrolled in the program in collaboration with the Manager of Extended Learning and school leaders

Academic Support

  • Work in collaboration with the site coordinator on recruitment and enrollment to ensure teachers have all student academic data for students who participate
  • Plan in collaboration with the site supervisor in promoting positive behavior and social/emotional learning
  • Assist the site coordinator with targeted recruitment and enrollment efforts based on students data
  • Assist the site coordinator in promoting positive behavior and social/emotional learning through academic incentives

Leadership and Partnership

Promote strategic integration of summer programming and other Enrichment & Extended Learning programs within the school improvement planning process

  • Support department-level strategic planning efforts, reporting, and grant writing as needed
  • Other duties are assigned by the Manager of Enrichment and Extended Learning, school principal, or district leaders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with relevant Mass. certification and SEI endorsement. Advanced study/certification in reading or special education preferred
  • Must be a current member of the school’s Instructional Leadership Team and actively involved in school improvement initiatives
  • At least three years of full-time teaching experience
  • Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply academic and non-academic data to instructional planning and execution
  • Proven ability to coach others and demonstrated capacity for instructional leadership
  • Collaborative, team player, and growth mindset
