: 1 Public Defender Investigator Youth Defense Division  Deadline to Apply:  Open Until Filled Work Location: Hamilton County Public Defender 230 East Ninth St. 2nd Floor Cincinnati, Oh. 45202 Work Hours:  80 hours/bi-weekly Starting Salary:  $23.71 an Hour Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification):  High School Diploma or GED and three years experience in law enforcement investigation (similar experience in the United States military or graduate from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy will substitute for the three years experience). Valid driver’s license issued by the state of residency. WORKING CONDITIONS: POSSIBLE EXPOSURE TO PHYSICALLY THREATENING SITUATIONS. Job Duties (Summary): Receives and investigates alleged criminal charges filed by the state against a child (e.g., travels to alleged crime scene, including homicides or other crimes of violence; photographs, videotapes or diagrams crime scene; discusses charges with counsel; secures reports and records relevant to the case; reviews evidence; locates and interviews witnesses, the youth-client and other persons having information pertinent to the case; completes case records); remains with the case from the beginning, through trial, and disposition; assists counsel with information and facts necessary to support the defense of the child; testifies in court. Serves as a source for counsel on matters of criminal investigation techniques, technical procedures for analyzing evidence, and securing expert testimony on matters relevant to the case before the court.  Provides technical and investigative training seminars presented by the office; attends seminars to further education on topics of relevant importance to criminal investigations; works in partnership with counsel and law enforcement agencies local, state and federal. Confers with Senior Investigator, or supervisor on all relevant criminal investigations; keeps supervisor updated on the progress of the investigation, the time necessary for completion of the investigation and the results or findings in the case. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The following are necessary to perform the duties of this position. Items with an "*” may be developed within a reasonable time of gaining employment. Knowledge of: The fast-paced nature of juvenile court proceedings; crime investigation and interrogation methods and procedures; law enforcement procedures and practices; law enforcement agencies; safety practices and procedures; pertinent federal, state and local laws and ordinances; technical writing; court procedures; public relations; computer operations and techniques; office practices and procedures; agency policies and procedures*. Skills: Active listening; communicate effectively; analytical skills; use of office equipment (e.g., computer, copier, calculator); use of investigative equipment, including, but not limited to, camera and video equipment. Ability to: Work independently, efficiently and thoroughly; define problems, collect data, gather records, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, law enforcement officials and the public; prepare and maintain accurate documentation and reports; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture or schedule form; maintain confidentiality of classified information.
