JobOverview:

  • Summary: Under generalsupervision is responsible for professional public health fieldcontact work of average difficulty and performs related work asrequired.
  • The goal of the InfectionPrevention Specialist is to protect the health of the citizens ofTennessee through the prevention and control of infections withinhealthcare settings such as Acute Care Hospitals Nursing Homes andOutpatient settings.

WorkActivities:

  • Conducts onsiteinfection control assessments of healthcare facilities providesfollowup consultation around mitigation of identified infectioncontrol gaps observes infection control practices and reviewspolicies and procedures to ensure compliance with national bestpractices endorsed by the Healthcare Infection Control PracticesAdvisory Committee (HICPAC) the Association for Professionals inInfection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and the Society forHealthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). Provides infectioncontrol training to internal and external stakeholders includingstate regional and local health department staff state surveyorsEmergency Medical Services (EMS) providers infection preventionistsand quality improvement specialists across the spectrum ofhealthcare.
  • Provides technical assistance andconducts training sessions for healthcare partners and users of theNational Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) including enrollmentassistance with the application of definitions and data validation.Responds to state and federal regulatory referrals (e.g. the JointCommission) for certified Medicare/Medicaid entities with immediatejeopardy infection control tags.
  • Responds tocomplaints referred by the Office of Healthcare Facilities or theHealth Boards. Interprets Tennessee Department of Healthregulations the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)Conditions of Participation (COP) Health Insurance Portability andAccountability Act (HIPAA) privacy rule information on the Centersfor Disease Control (CDC) websites and medical/legal conceptsregarding healthcare data.
  • Provides supportin the investigation of Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI)outbreaks and containment responses to single cases of pathogens ofurgent public health concern in healthcare settings. Providesconsultative infection control advice to facility staff regardingthe management of infectious patients/residents and other infectionprevention issues.
  • Participates inEmerging Infections Program funded multistate point prevalencesurveys and other related Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI)grant funded projects.
  • Serves as anindependent outside infection control observer in public healthemergencies (e.g. Ebola or other highly infectious diseases).Applies principles of antibiotic stewardship and qualityimprovement to infection control activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education andExperience: Graduation from an accredited college or universitywith a bachelor s degree in an applied clinical science includingNursing Public Health Medical or Clinical Laboratory Science or adirectly related field and experience equivalent to two years ofprofessional fulltime infection control experience; OR Licensed asRegistered Nurse (RN) and one year of experience in infectioncontrol; OR Graduation from an accredited college or universitywith a PhD in Nursing Public Health Medical or Clinical LaboratoryScience or a directly related field a DrPH or APN and one year ofexperience in infection control; OR Graduation from an accreditedcollege or university with an associate degree in an appliedclinical science including Nursing Public Health Medical orClinical Laboratory Science or a directly related field and fouryears of experience in infection control.   • Necessary SpecialQualifications: Applicants for this class must: Be eligible for aNational Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC)within six months of hire date or already be certified and retaincertification for the duration of employment.
