The Johns Hopkins University Neuroscience Department is seeking a Research Technologist to participate and assist the experiments on understanding metabolic signaling between tissues in health and disease by using established protocols and procedures.

Who will work under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor. The Research Technologist will be responsible for maintenance of mouse strains used in studies of metabolic signaling induced by genetic changes in cellular copper homeostasis. This includes breeding, genotyping, injection of metabolic sensors, tissue collection, and preparing samples for tissue imaging and mass-spectrometry analysis using protocols available in the laboratory. Research Technologist will also be required to occasionally work with the available cell culture to produce monoclonal antibodies, monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The expectation is that the Research Technologist will have basic understanding of theory behind the experiments, have analytical skills to carry out assigned projects, have initiative, and work collaboratively with other members of the group.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in research to elucidate the molecular stratification of different classes of neurons in the CNS.
  • Perform in vivo two photon imaging of oligodendrocytes in mice.
  • Determine the density of oligodendrocytes in longitudinal imaging datasets.
  • Reconstruct the morphology of individual oligodendrocytes and their myelin sheaths.
  • Quantify changes in the density and morphology of oligodendrocytes in vivo in response to exposure to remyelination agents.
  • Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • 1-2 years' experience working with experimental animals (mice or rats).


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
  • Individuals with 1-2 years of post-undergraduate experience using electron microscopy or confocal microscopy and desire to genetically engineered animal models are also encouraged to apply.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY ($40,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
