Job summary

We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic, well-motivated secretary to join our medical secretarial team within the surgery and Critical care division at Royal Lancaster Infirmary. Current or recent Secretarial experience, with a typing qualification is desirable, together with a good standard of English. Knowledge of medical terminology and IT systems would be an advantage, although training will be given.

Working as part of a small team, you will be required to liaise with patients and a number of internal and external departments, agencies and providers; therefore highly developed communication skills are essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide a robust and comprehensive secretarial and administration service to the Specialty team, Service Managers, Senior Medical Staff and their teams.

About us

We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

Educated to GCSE level or equivalent to include Maths and English language NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience in business admin

Desirable

ECDL or recognised typing qualification or relevant experience OCR/RSA Level 3 or ability to type 60 words per minute Audio typing equivalent qualification or experience

Experience

Essential

Previous administration and/or clerical experience Audio typing experience or relevant IT skills and experience

Desirable

Experience of working with a digital dictating system Previous secretarial experience

Knowledge of data protection and the requirement for confidentiality Evidence of clear communication, skills, with the ability to use tact and diplomacy at all times Proficiency in the use of Microsoft office 365 packages Proficiency in English Language Able to work following instruction and procedures Ability to work as part of a team and be a supportive team member Accuracy and attention to detail
