Food & Water Watch is looking for summer organizing interns to join our team and help organize to protect our food, water and climate.  The summer interns will work closely with our on-the-ground organizers, volunteers, community partners, and other staff at Food & Water Watch. The internships are 29 hours/week and run for 9 weeks from June 3 - August 2. The positions will be based in New York City, NY, New Brunswick, NJ, Tampa, FL, San Francisco/Oakland, CA,  and Albuquerque, NM.

Making this happen requires involving people in the pressing issues of our time at the local, state, and federal level, building on one win after another, as we develop a larger movement that has the political power to make our democratic process work. 

About the position:

The Organizing interns will report to Organizers in their region and will work with other staff on the organizing teams to support Food & Water Watch’s work. Primary responsibilities will be supporting local, state and national campaigns and helping to build the organization through recruitment events in the field, such as tabling, petitioning, flyering, phone banks, and other similar activities. Organizing interns will receive training and mentorship in organizing skills including recruitment, event planning, and campaign strategy. 

Location: New York City, NY (Food & Water Watch’s office is in downtown Brooklyn); New Brunswick, NJ; Tampa, FL; San Francisco/Oakland, CA;  and Albuquerque, NM.

Responsibilities                     

  1. Recruit activists and volunteers. Help to bring in new activists and potential volunteers through tabling and clipboarding at events throughout the summer.
  2. Help organize campaign tactics. Help to execute strategic tactics to meet our goals, primarily recruitment and outreach events. This includes phonebanks, rallies, marches, petition drives, and more.
  3. Represent Food & Water Watch. Participate in joint events and tactics with partner organizations on behalf of Food & Water Watch.  
  4. Use digital tools. Become proficient in outreach tools such as ThruText and Hubdialer, 
  5. Carry out other projects as assigned. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Some volunteer or paid organizing experience in community or school.
  • Commitment to Food & Water Watch’s core values of justice, human dignity, fair treatment, and equity.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse racial, ethnic, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent time management & organizational skills and ability to balance multiple projects.
  • Ability to work using basic online tools, including email, Slack, and Google docs.

Compensation:

  • Pay rate for NY, NJ, CA  (high cost of living area)- $20/hour
  • Pay rate for Tampa,FL, Albuquerque, NM  - $16/hour
