POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing screening, assessment, mental health counseling and other services that reduce barriers to learning and create opportunities for greater academic achievement and student success. The Mental Health Counselor reports to the Director of the Student Wellness Center.

JOB DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

Service

  • Professionally and efficiently execute Cameron University’s commitment to student success.
  • Provides consultation, screening, assessment, individual and group mental health counseling, or other inventions as needed to college students in accordance with evidenced based services, the wellness center scope of practice and protocol.
  • Provides intervention, prevention and crisis management services as warranted.
  • Keeps accurate and timely clinical records on all contacts with clients by utilizing the electronic medical record keeping system.
  • Consults with the wellness center director regularly clinical and student needs.
  • Actively participates in monthly data collection, process improvement and outcome management requirements.
  • Participates in general, clinical and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Consults and provides consultation regarding wellness center services to faculty, staff, and the community.
  • Conducts presentations for the general student population and participates in scheduled monthly wellness and mental health programs across campus.
  • Participates in multiple training events with university housing advisors, student tutors, and other student support groups upon request.
  • Represents the Student Wellness Center at a variety of campus events including, but not limited to, graduation ceremonies, block party events, student welcome week, festivals, fairs and wellness center sponsored events.
  • Assists to ensure the master calendar for the wellness center is current.
  • Advise the Director on significant matters, and provide support for the University’s Risk Management team.
  • Participates in training and all activities associated with the University Emergency Response team, including possible work assignments in the event of a disaster or emergency.
  • Participates in university-wide committees as requested.

Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with ethical standards in the execution of services in accordance with the American Counseling Association, Oklahoma State Board of Licensure, all university and regent policies, along with other local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Attends external professional development training, internal university required training, and maintains active license status.
  • Maintains active professional licensure liability insurance.

Community Relations

  • Work collaboratively with all university departments to ensure efficient delivery of services and productive use of resources to meet university expectations with regard to student mental and behavioral health and wellness.
  • Maintains a current professional service contact list for outside student referrals.
  • Assist students with accessing community mental wellness resources and provides warm referral for services outside the university.
  • Provide community outreach and presentations related to mental health and wellness strategies to community partners, organizations as others as directed.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Possess an understanding of patient confidentiality, protected health information, informed consent, ethical standards and disclosure rules, protocol and requirements.
  • Well developed listening and interview skills to assess and explore student needs.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to develop effective treatment plans.
  • Demonstrated skill in individual and/or group therapy, culturally competent approaches in therapy, crisis intervention, consultation, and outreach.
  • Knowledge of a variety best practice and evidenced based counseling interventions.
  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to engage and retain students in clinical services.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with university colleagues.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse student population.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Must hold a current Oklahoma LPC/LMFT license or be under supervision with an approved supervisor.
  • Minimum of one year of prior experience with adolescents or adults.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and ability to be insured under the University’s policy.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word and Excel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fully licensed LPC/LMFT with 2-5 years of experience in individual counseling.
  • Experience working with diverse and varied student populations including low socioeconomic (SES), first generation, and other groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
  • Training in motivational interviewing, trauma-informed practice, and services.

SALARY RANGE : Budgeted at $46,000/annually plus benefits. Opportunity for performance compensation subject to approval and budgetary availability.
