Position Purpose

The Laboratory Services position is responsible for the evaluation and processing of donated ocular tissue for transplantation. This position prepares workstations for lamellar preparations, and post-processing workstations, performs cleaning and sterilization of instruments, evaluates eye tissue, and processes eye tissue which includes but is not limited to DSAEK, DMEK, PDEK and ALK. This position works a rotating schedule ensuring adequate coverage in the Laboratory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare instrument kits for sterilization
  • Sterilize instrumentation
  • Circulate in the lab in support of the processing of corneal tissue for lamellar preparations DSAEK, DMEK, PDEK, and ALK
  • Use independent judgment to perform corneal evaluation via specular, slit lamp and black light microscopy, and OCT
  • Complete required documentation and perform data entry following LWVI policies and procedures
  • Perform lamellar-tissues processing including DSAEK, DMEK, PDEK and ALK. Expertise is shown in processing lamellar grafts and performs the most advanced processing types.
  • Perform sterile tissue processing for cornea and scleral grafts.
  • Perform all functions in adherence to LWVI policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance at all times with FDA, EBAA, and the state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Perform laboratory maintenance following LWVI policies
  • Assist with packaging, shipping, and receiving as needed
  • Assist with training of Laboratory Specialist I and Laboratory Specialist II as needed
  • Perform other duties as requested by management

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Previous experience in Eye Banking in a lab setting required
  • Knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and disease processes preferred

Certifications

Certified as an Eye Bank Technician desired; must attain within two years of employment

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service, attention to detail, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to interact with co-workers within and outside of the department
  • Ability to effectively prioritize shift activities
  • Knowledge of the principles of microbiology, and sterile/aseptic technique as it relates to eye banking
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite of Products; ie Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Project, etc.
  • Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology
  • Be a self-starter and perform work independently
  • Must have or obtain a Hepatitis B vaccination
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, and or holidays as required
  • Ability to accept guidance

Relocation will be offered.

Work Environment

The work environment described here is representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to a laboratory-like environment. The noise level is usually low. Open discussions about donor health and circumstances of death occur throughout the day. Equipment required for this position includes but are not limited to, sterile supplies that may contain latex, surgical gloves and sterile attire, standard office space and equipment, standard and advanced PC equipment and printers, and telephone.

Physical Demands

The physical demands representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job includes but are not limited to being regularly required to sit, stand, talk, see, and hear; needing to possess conversational hearing, with or without aid, as well as adequate vision, required to possess dexterity to operate standard office equipment, diagnostic equipment, and operating microscopes, occasionally required to lift 25 pounds or more.
